June 28, 1892 Dahlonega, Ga., June 24. -- The Alumni Society of the University of Georgia Agricultural college met at 9 a.m. yesterday. Twenty members were present. At 11 o'clock Professor J. W. Boyd, of Young Harris college, introduced the alumni orator, Colonel U. G. Canning, of Gadsden, Ala. Mr. Canning is a graduate of the class of '85-'86. "Cabal" was his subject. His speech was the most rining democratic address taht has been delivered in Dahlonega for years, and created a sensation. He dealt with secret political societies with gloves off, and his eloquence was such that storms of applause greeted almost every period. Every secret combination or "cabal" from the Tweed ring to the third party was touched up. Among the graduates of other years present we noticed Professor W. R. Chamblie, president of Gainesville college; Professor J. W. Boyd, of Young Harris institute; J. J. Gaillard, a brother of Professor B. P. Gaillard, of this college; Colonel Canning, the speaker; Professor W. S. Wilson and E. Benton Vickery, of the University of Georgia Agricultural college, and Misses Lizzie Chapman and Leslie Basinger and Mrs. W. F. Crusselle and others deserving notice. There is not a college in the state, as young as this one, that can point to more noble sons and daughters now honoring their alma mater. At 8 p.m. came the sophomore and freshman declamations. Prizes will be awarded for the best speakers. The alumni have asked Colonel Canning for a copy of his speech for publication. Today will close the exercises and diplomas will be delivered tonight at 8 o'clock.
