M. Nov. 6 th 1943 My Dear Aileen, Ever since I wrote you the other day I've been thinking & trying to "recall" some thing more of the past. The conviction that my grandfather,, Nathan Bryan, had the same coloring as did Aunt Susan & as Jasper, her son. There were some old fashioned "degueratypes" of him & of my grandmother, but, as I remember they were identical with the small photographs I still have, except that they were "tinted" My father [Jasper N. Bryan 1840-1892] had some, but like the one we had of him, taken in his uniform as a soldier of the Confederate army, which I think was taken at the same time, as those of his parents. Jim had the three, but once he wrote me that the "coloring" on each of them had disintegrated. Later, Virginia had them together with my grandfather's bible, with all the dates of family births, deaths, etc. They were burned, when Mabel's house in which she & Harris were living burned. [Mary C. Crawford didn’t have a brother named James. From these letters, it looks like she refers to her brother Edgar Chandler Bryan as Jim. I have posted the two photos she refers to of Nathan & Mary Lofley Bryan online but I have never seen the one of Jasper N. Bryan in his Confederate uniform. I don’t know who Mabel is.] However, my father's "beard" was of a very fiery red & when he let it grow, most luxurious & "bushy". He & Jim had practically the same coloring. Bert resembled my mother's people, the Fitzpatricks. The last address, I had from Virginia came almost a year ago. It was this: 4000 Hawthorne Avenue, Highland Park, Dallas, Texas. She has often said of herself: "I am the world's worst correspondent. I so seldom write to anyone." [Virginia E. Bryan dau of Edgar C. Bryan & Bessie V. Candler]. That address came to me from Bert. I have had only one letter from her since they left Florida some three or four years ago. I have wondered about Minnie & her family. [I don’t know who this is.] I used to keep in touch with them through Nannie B. Lupfer, but since she left Kissimmee, I know nothing of the M'ville people, except through an occasional letter from Jessie Reese Murph. I suppose you know, that Pearlie, having reached the limit in years, allowed to teach in Florida, was "retired" last June. Conrad is still sitting on that front porch of theirs day in & day out. [Francis Conrad Bryan is Mary C. Bryan’s brother. He married Pearlie Tyner]. S__hers is still with them except when he is in jail, charged with "drunkenness & disorderly conduct & indecent exposure" which is quite often the case. [Not sure who this is. Conrad & Pearlie had two sons: John Nathan Bryan, Sr. (1897-1946) and Francis Conrad Bryan, Jr. (1901-1944). Both are off living with their wives & kids for 1930 census.] With love & appreciation for all that you have done in tracing down the geneology of our family. Your cousin, Mary C.
