Uncle Horace, who died two years ago ( ca 1935) was from an old family of Lumpkin negroes, who have lived around Oglethorpe for years, deriving their name from the Lumpkin family. They have always held themselves as negro aristocrats, belonging to Gen Phil Cook's mother-in-law, Mrs. Lumpkin. Mrs. Peel, Gen Cook's daughter of Atlanta keeping up the standard of old years by being faithful to the slaves, helped in many ways to finance this school. pg 183 Source: The History of Macon County Mrs. Louise Frederick Hays (1935) Note: 1880 Census District 1070, Macon, Georgia Lumpkin, Robert b m 32 Ellen b f 29 Robert b m 9 Jessie b m 7 Horace b m 4 Alberta b f 1/12 May Daug
