Our neighbor county friends are to be congratulated upon the undertaking and its very successful termination. A long list of premiums was offered for individual displays and their awardings was a matter of great interest not so much for the amount of the prize but for the fact that the recipients had given his or her best efforts in specializing on the farm, which ought to be done on every farm but is too often neglected. We are pleased to learn through those attending the fair, that our genial friend, Mr. Bob Hicks, of Delta, was given the first cash prize for the best showing of pigs. Mr. Hicks has for years been the leading farmer of Macon County in hog raising and by winning the premium offered in this department we are given no surprise. Mr. Hicks makes a specialty of raising the Poland China hogs. One fact that is of particular interest to us is the statement made by the Montezuma Record in speaking of the fair that the best display of cotton was made by Taylor County farmers, who, of course, could not be listed as competitors and receive the prizes because these were only offered to Macon County Farmers, but it shows what Taylor County farmers are doing. The Taylor County display of cotton was by J.A. Matthews and others. Governor Hoke Smith and Hon. Pope Brown, candidate for Governor delivered addresses, while other men of state prominence were present and added interest to the successful occasion. The needlework and display of canned goods, preserves and jellies by the good women of Macon County were classed among the best displays of the fair. The corn display was good and in speaking of this item the Record says: “As usual the boys beat the old farmers raising corn. Their yield was from 40 to 150 bushels to the acre, while the old men were from 60 to 102 bushels per acre.” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/macon/newspapers/nw14561911maco.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.7 Kb
