Quite a number of cases of Rosella are reported in town and the surrounding county. It is said that the celebrated mill pond case will come up on Thursday during court week. Mr. George W. Williams, our tax receiver, says the property of Macon County this year will be about $1,700,000. Wilson and Marshall’s new boat is about ready for launching. It will be a much handsomer boat than the Montezuma. We believe there is three thousand mosquitoes to the square inch in Flint River swamp, and we are not handling the trust carelessly when we say so. The Alerts have just received a new bell, which weighs 416 pounds, and can be heard farther than any bell in the town or county. It will be put in a new tower on the engine house. Last week Cols. Herman and Bivins were fishing at Sein Beach, when their attention was attracted by an old sow near the waters edge, which gave a lamented grunt and immediately her back was covered with little pigs, and she swam across a lake about fifty yards wide with them in position described. They declare the statement is a fact, and the veracity of these gentlemen is unquestionable. Geo. W. Staley died recently at the home of his brother-in-law of typho- malarial fever. The antis of Macon County won the prohibition fight by a majority of 84. The prohibitionists will contest and able counsel have been employed on both sides. Mrs. Plowman better known as “Betsy Hamilton,” gave an entertainment last Tuesday for the benefit of the church. It is reported that a Montezuma man and a lady from Dooly will soon join hearts and hands. Rev. A.J. Harvey, of Oglethorpe, preached a splendid sermon at the Baptist church last Sunday. The residence of Mr. L.J. Goodwin, residing about five miles from Oglethorpe, was burned last Saturday. A whisky war is going on at Oglethorpe. One glass of calamity water and two glasses of beer can be had for a nick. Montezuma contains about twenty marriageable young men. Macon County has five one-arm soldiers and they are all against Gordon. There is a majority of 29 in this district for Major Bacon for Governor. Recent heavy rains have forced the river out of the banks again, covering all the low lands hereabouts. All the crops on the swamplands have been injured seriously and most of them will be to be planted over. The businessmen of Montezuma have held a railroad meeting looking after the interest of the town.
