First a miscreant entered the building and tore up the children’s books and now comes the fiery elements and lays to ashes the beautiful school building which stood like a sentinel on the hill, keeping vigils over the town below. The building was isolated from water and the fire companies could render no assistance. The house was valued at $2,300, and was insured for $1,500 - $500 in the Atlanta Home and $1,000 in the Georgia Home at Columbus. Some of the desks and all of the books were saved, and the piano of Mrs. Julia McEvoy, which was in the north wing of the house. Prof. Ryals had just laid in his supply of coal for the winter, but all of it was not in the house, and some of it was saved. The citizens held a meeting on the night after the fire in the morning and raised $847 towards building a new house. It does not take the enterprising people of Montezuma long to overcome a little misfortune like the burning of a schoolhouse.
