I found the Traveler's Rest Methodist Church a couple of years ago; unfortunately, the graveyard was so overgrown with weeds I could not navigate it to find his grave. Last week, a look-up vol. discovered the name of Elias' wife in the book: METHODIST PREACHERS IN GEORGIA 1783 - 1900 - SUPPLEMENT She was Lavenia Edwards Jordan Johnson (b. 4/9/1798 in Washington Co., Ga; d. Dooly Co., Ga. 5/2/1878. Elias and Lavenia had the following children: Rev.William Parks Jordan, Rev.Miles Clark Jordan (both of Dooly co.), Russell V. Jordan, M.D., and Augusta Ann Jordan (my gggrandmother) who married Rev. John S. West. If anyone else is researching this family, I would be happy to share more details. ============ Dcbaker9@aol.com I was thrilled to hear from you re Traveler's Rest Methodist Church. In my last post, I failed to mention that when I went to the church, I noted the 1st Salem Baptist Church just down the road past the old Traveler's Rest church. I encountered a very helpful, pleasant young woman, Latisha Beal, who was helping paint the interior of her church. She accompanied me in my search of the old graves in her churchyard and tried to help me in the older section adjacent to the old church. She indicated that her grandmother was buried from the old church in the 1980's, and that she had attended services there. We lamented the condition of the abandoned church. Unfortunately, I did not think to ask her if her church held the deed to the old property. Perhaps discovering that information might be a clue to an approach to appealing to the church to mount a clean-up campaign and perhaps an effort to "save" the sweet old church for it's historical value. I've thought many times about trying to correspond with Latisha Beal to explore the possibility of receiving donations toward that end; however, I failed to get her address or that of the church. Do you know whether the Historical Society might have an interest in exploring the historic value of the church? Thanks again for your continued interest. Dot Baker =========== THANK YOU for your follow-up information on Rev. Elias Jordan. The Travelers Rest Cemetery has been a great mystery for so long. I have tried so many times to go through this cemetery, thinking that possibly I can make it this time. A number of years ago I approached the Macon County Board of Commissioners about cleaning up this situation but at that time they had no resources, I was told. It is such a delicate treasure, it really should be done by someone who really cares about the history it holds. We were very FORTUNATE to have been given this list of burials to be printed in "Cemeteries of Macon County" by Mrs. Janet Williams who with a committee, surveyed the cemetery about 20 years prior, when it could be. ======================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be freely used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
