On Saturday night about twelve o'clock March 16th the spirit of Mr. Geo. Mathews, took its flight and he passed from the shading things of earth to that enduring eternal Heaven above. The funeral and interment occurred in the Potterville cemetery Sunday afternoon, Rev. C. H. Moore and Bro. Edwards, conducting the burial service. Mr. Mathews was born Aug. 1st 1855, was married to Miss N. A. Shirah, March 25, 1875. These dates embrace some of the most important events of his very quiet but well spent life, as we feel and hope. He had been in very feeble health for a number of months but of course his ultimate recovery was hoped for until the last. We are never prepared to give up one of our loved ones in death and Oh, how hard it is, to realize that we cannot clasp their hands again -- hear their loving voice -- behold sweet smiles ever again! But we must not complain at the will of our precious Heavenly Father, for we are taught by his word that He doeth all things well. Mr. Mathews was a good quiet citizen, a considerate loving father and husband. A man whose friendship was valuable. Esteemed highly by all who knew him best. He leaves six children, four daughters and two sons, eighteen grand children and a lovely grief stricken wife to mourn their irreparable loss. We extend our heartfelt sympathy in this sad bereavement. A FRIEND March 20, 1918 The Butler Herald Butler, Taylor County Georgia Thursday, April 4, 1918 page 3 G.W. Mathews As the morning star ushered the dawn of the day of rest on March 16, 1918, the Death Angel visited our home and took from us our loving and kind father. As a friend he was loved by all who knew him, father was kind to everybody he met and it seems like more than we can bear to give him up. He had been in declining health for several years and all that loving hands could do was done to relieve his suffering, but the Lord knows best for all, and He called father to a better home where suffering will be no more, but where all is peace, happiness and rest. Father was born August 1, 1855 and was married to Miss N. A. Shirah March 25, 1875 and to them were born fourteen children eight of them have preceded him to the grave. Besides a loving wife he leaves six children to mourn the loss, namely: Two sons, John H and Milton Mathews, daughters Iva Mathews, Missouri Jones, Lou Perkins, Della Childree. He was laid to rest in the Potterville cemetery on Sunday afternoon, Rev. C. H. Moore conducting the funeral service.
