J. Brown, who once lived in this community, but who had lived at Parks Springs, Texas, for several years past, was murdered at the latter place last Thursday afternoon by J. T. Bellows, by being shot through the heart with a Winchester rifle. Dr. Brown had gone to the drug store in the little town where he lived and where he made his office, and, on account of having lost a great deal of sleep, laid down on the counter to take a nap. Mr. Bellows came in from Sunset, in an intoxicated condition; drove to his home, got his rifle and went back into the town, stating that he was going to kill two men--Dr. Brown and the teacher of the school there. Mr. Bellows being a man addicted to drink and one who, when in this condition, was always saying he intended to kill some one, no attention was paid to his threat. He went to the drug store where Dr. Brown was sleeping, saw him lying on the counter, walked in, and as he did so Dr. Brown woke up and started to rise, when Bellows cocked his gun, saying: "You have got to die!" and fired before any one could stop him--the ball going directly through the heart, coming out through his back and lodging in his coat. Not a word was said by Dr. Brown before he was shot, and the only thing he said afterwards was, "Look out, Lloyd," (speaking to the druggist) when he fell from the counter and died. There had not before this been any fuss or cross words between the two men -- - Bellows seeming to think a good deal of the doctor--pretending all the time to be his friend. Bellows was arrested and lynching was threatened, but cooler heads got together and he was put in jail to await his trial. Mrs. Brown brought the body here for burial, reaching here Monday afternoon-- the interment being Tuesday at 11 o'clock, a large congregation of the relatives and friends of the deceased being present. Mrs. Brown is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I. J. Meadow, and will not return to Texas, but make her home here--having arranged her business so she will not have to return. The citizens of the little town and surrounding country gave Mrs. Brown all the assistance they could and consoled her as much as possible in her bereavement. Dr. Brown had built up a fine practice there, and the people all seemed to be his friends. His was a young life cut off in its usefulness, coming when least expected and in a manner as bad as that of the midnight assassin--going on him when asleep, without a moment's warning and for no cause on earth. (Comer Notes, same issue) Dr. T. J. Brown, of Texas, formerly of our county, was murdered last week. His remains were taken from the train here Monday, on their way to Danielsville, where they were laid to rest.
