Georgia state troopers said Arthur Thompson of Route 1, Colbert, had stopped at the Edwards Road entry onto Georgia 72, but according to witnesses then pulled into the path of a car driven by Bryan Scoggins, 25, of Route 5, Elberton. Scoggings' 1968 Chevrolet Camaro struck Thompson's 1978 Mercury Marquis in the rear and on the passenger's side at an estimated speed of 50 mph. Still, Thompson's car was "not damaged that badly," according to one trooper, perhaps because the two cars were by then headed roughly in the same direction. However, Thompson was not wearing a seat belt, said the trooper, and as pronounced dead on arrival at Athen General Hospital. Scoggins was later treated at St. Mary's Hospital and released in good condition. A passenger in his car, 20-year-old Barbara Joslyn of Route 2, Elberton, was admitted to St. Mary's in stable condition. Additional Comments: This traffic accident happened 1.0 mile from Mr. Thompson's home only two months after the death of his wife. See obituaries for both Thompson on the Obituary link.
