The soldier was a member of a group of men who volunteered to extinguish a roaring blaze in a bomb dump containing 3,400 tons of high explosives. " Regardless of the great danger, " read the citation, " they removed the bombs to clear a break, evacuated and gave aid to the men who had been wounded by explosives and ultimately brought the fire under control. " " By their courageousness " continued the citation, " they prevented great loss of life and vital material.
