A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. McCannon was a son of the late Sam and Sallie Holiday McCannon. He was a retired truck driver and was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Lee Singley officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, Athens. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Survivors include his wife, Shelby Harper McCannon; three sons, Russell McCannon, Bogart, Steven McCannon, Hull, and Charles McCannon, Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Sheila Barnett, Bogart; two stepsons, Keith Porterfield, Kitty Hawk, N.C., and Frank Porterfield, Danielsville; two stepdaughters, Tina Hilley and Misty McElreath, both of Colbert; three brothers, Sam McCannon, Arnoldsville, Walter McCannon, Elberton, and Grady McCannon, Watkinsville; two sisters, Shirley King, Athens, and Betty Lovett, Sylvania; six grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren. Pallbearers will be Talmadge Booth, Grady Allen, Harold Ferguson, Bill Madden, Buddy Moore and Wallace Powell. The family is at the residence and will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville.
