A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Ashworth was a son of Ellen P. Ashworth, Gibson, and the late William R. Ashworth. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of American Legion Post 123 of Oglethorpe County. He was retired from Poss' Famous Foods and was a member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Sandy Cross Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry James and Larry Davison officiating. Burial will be in the Sandy Cross Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Marie G. Ashworth; a son, Bill Ashworth, Comer; a sister, Martha Ashworth, Gibson; and two grandchildren. Pallbearers will be David Huff, Greg Simmons, Frank Stevens, Robert Johnson, Jeffery Norman and Barry Johnson. Members of the American Legion Post 123 will serve as honorary pallbearers. Memorials may be made to Sandy Cross Baptist Church. Lord and Stephens Oglethorpe Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
