A native of Waxhaw, N.C., Mr. Helms was a son of the late Earl and Nancy Carter Helms. He was employed by Alltel Corp. and was a member of New Bethel Congregational Holiness Church, Royston. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at New Bethel Congregational Holiness Church with the Rev. Hugh Herbert officiating. Burial will be in Danielsville Memorial Gardens. The body will be placed in the church at 12:30 p.m. Survivors include his wife, Jacquilian J. Helms; five daughters, Bonnie Kittle, Hull, Christine Brooks, Comer, Willine Hand and Patricia Hardy, both of Carlton, and Carol Hand, Danielsville; four sons, Walter Helms Jr., Hull, John Helms and Richard Helms, both of Carlton, and Douglas Helms, Athens; three brothers, Harper Helms, Beavercreek, Ohio, Earl Helms Jr., Wyoming, and Gray Helms, Fort Mill, S.C.; five sisters, Pauline Hargett, Bellevue, Neb., Beulah Helms and Sadie Pinyan, both of Monroe, N.C., Mary White, Iva, S.C., and Joyce Hobbs, Wixom, Mich.; 15 grandchildren; and a great- grandchild. Pallbearers will be Brian Akins, Donald Jones, David Herring, Travis Shelton, Danny Scarborough, Chester Bray, David Gueth and Jerry Hart. The family is at the residence of Carol Hand. Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
