Waddell Van Leeman "Red" Waddell, 82, of Hull, died Monday, November 1, 1999. A native of Jackson County, Mr. Waddell was a son of the late Marion Boyd and Lillie Jones Waddell. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II, and was a retired auto mechanic. Mr. Waddell was a member of Central Baptist Church, Athens. He was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Boyd Waddell. Funeral services were held Thursday, November 4, in the chapel of Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, with the Rev. Dennis Kesler officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Paul J. Waddell, John M. Barton, Cindy L. Barton, Jason Sartain, Matt Sartain and Charles Fouche served as pallbearers. Survivors include his wife, Volina Sue Kelley Waddell; two daughters, Victoria Sartain, Hull, and Beatrice Fitzpatrick, Commerce; one son, Paul Waddell, Hull; three sisters, Frances Griffeth, Watkinsville, Annis Haggard, Winder, and Robbie Haggard, Commerce; one brother, Walter Waddell, Nicholson; eight grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. Fields, 76, of Hull, died Wednesday, November 3, 1999. Mr. Fields was born in Jackson County, a son of the late Lonnie G. and Ella Plott Fields. He worked as a brick mason and carpenter and was a member of New Harmony Baptist Church. Funeral services were held Friday, November 5, at New Harmony Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Dillard Sr. officiating. Burial was in the Gordon's Chapel Methodist Church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Lorine H. Fields; one son, Michael G. Fields, Tennessee; two daughters, Virginia Brown, Alabaster, Ala., and Linda Taylor, Hull; three step-sons, Ralph Gooch, Hartwell, Calvin Gooch, Watkinsville, and Marvin Gooch, Athens; two step- daughters, Pat Bright, Orange Park, Fla., and Linda Bright, Athens; nine grandchildren, a number of great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Bales was born December 5, 1935, in Jackson County, but lived most of his life in Madison County. He was a son of the late Ellis and Lula Dellinger Bales. Mr. Bales owned and operated his own antique business and was of the Baptist denomination. Funeral services were held Friday, November 5, in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Elmer Butler officiating. Burial was in the Antioch Methodist Church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Louise Archer Bales, Danielsville; two daughters, Elaine Sorrow, Ila, and Marie Sorrow, Danielsville; three sons, Tony Bales, Hull, Bobby Bales Jr., Brunswick, and Donald Lee Bales, Toccoa; four sisters, Lena Cowart and Annie Mae Smith, both of Hull, and Shirley Cowart and Frances Monroe, both of Athens; and one brother, Ralph Bales, Athens. Cheek, 89, of Royston, died Sunday, October 31, 1999, at Comer Health Care Center. A native of Madison County, Mr. Cheek was born June 10, 1910. He was a son of the late Will and Quilla Vaughn Cheek. Mr. Cheek was a retired poultry farmer and a member of the Royston Church of God. He also served as a former board member of the Farmer's Home Association. Mr. Cheek was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Alma Mary Dean Cheek, a brother, Harvey Cheek, and a sister, Floy Vaughn. Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 2, in the chapel of Pruitte Funeral Home, Royston, with the Revs. James Gunn and Malcolm Herndon officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Royston. Tim Chitwood, Brent Chitwood, Dusty Chitwood, Justin Chitwood, Joey Cheek, Kent Pearson, Gary Crowe and Dean Crowe served as pallbearers. Haley Mrs. Annie Corene Hatcher Haley, 78, of Crawford, died Tuesday, November 2, 1999, at Athens Regional Medical Center, Athens. Mrs. Haley was born February 9, 1921, in Hall County. She was a daughter of the late John Richard Hatcher and Icie Mae Suddeth Hatcher. Mrs. Haley was a homemaker and of the Baptist denomination. She was preceded in death by a sister, Arlene Haley. Funeral services were held Thursday, November 4, in the chapel of Pruitte Funeral Home, Royston, with the Rev. Ray Jenkins officiating. Burial was in Danielsville Memorial Gardens. Charles Haley, William Haley, Nick Haley, Wade Haley, Jimmy Jones and Larry Harrison served as pallbearers. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Mrs. Lampkin was preceded in death by her husband, E.H. Lampkin. Funeral services were held Friday, November 5, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, with Dr. Jon Appleton officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Poole Mrs. Ida Mae Massey Poole, 81, of Commerce, a resident of BJC Nursing Home, died Thursday, November 4, 1999, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce. A native of Banks County, Mrs. Poole was born August 13, 1918. She was a daughter of the late Lon and Camilla Brown Massey. Mrs. Poole was a retired manager of McConnell Five and Dime Store and was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Fletcher Poole. Funeral services were held Saturday, November 6, at Webbs Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Bob Hill and Ralph Smith officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Survivors include one son, Gene Poole, Griffin; two daughters, Barbara Jones, Lula, and Carolyn Wilson, Commerce; two sisters, Mary Evelyn Aycock and Ruth Cartey, both of Athens; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Mr. Strickland was born in Oconee County, a son of Golden Williamson Strickland and the late Robert Strickland. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and served during Vietnam, receiving the Bronze Star. Mr. Strickland had worked for Russell Research Center in Athens. Funeral services were held Monday, November 8, in the chapel of Brown's Funeral Home, Danielsville. Burial was in the Erastus Church cemetery. Mr. Strickland's nephews served as pallbearers. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include two sons, Steven Strickland, Colbert, and David Strickland, Avondale Estates; one brother, William Strickland, Gastonia, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
