Escoe Mrs. Dorothy Freeman Escoe, 79, of Danielsville, died Thursday, November 25, 1999, at her residence. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Escoe was born May 15, 1920. She was a daughter of the late George B. and Annie Ginn Freeman. Mrs. Escoe was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Madison County. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Escoe. Funeral services were held Saturday, November 27, in the chapel of Pruitte Funeral Home, Royston. Burial was in Danielsville Memorial Gardens. Survivors include her husband, Robert L. "Bud" Escoe; son and daughter-in-law, George R. and Donna Escoe, Commerce; daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Tommy Lord, Danielsville, and Debra and Mark Waldrop, Ila; four sisters, Nellie Hitchcock, Commerce, Grace Gordon, Danielsville, Gladys Rowland, Anderson, S.C., and Callie McLeskey, Hartwell; one brother, G.B. Freeman, Danielsville; and grandchildren, Brent Escoe and Kasie Escoe, both of Commerce, Keith and Lauren Lord and Tyson Lord, all of Danielsville, Travis Pirtle, U.S.N., and Marisa Waldrop and Nickolas Waldrop, both of Ila. Pruitte Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. -------------------------------------------- The Madison County Journal, December 1, 1999 James O. Hix Jr. James O. Hix Jr., 78, of Hull, died Thursday, November 25, 1999. A native of Madison County, Mr. Hix was a son of the late James O. and Maebell Barnette Hix. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II, and was the owner and operator of Hix Body & Paint Shop from 1956 until his retirement in 1987. Mr. Hix was a member of Hull Baptist Church, a 50-year member of Mt. Vernon Masonic Lodge #22 and a member of the Hull Civic Club. He was preceded in death by seven sisters and three brothers, and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Funeral services were held Saturday, November 27, at Hull Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Crowe and LTC Harold Huff officiating. Burial was in Colbert Cemetery. Sam Glenn, Sammy Tucker, David Harward, James Beatenbaugh, Winston Berryman, Scott Ellis, Nathan Wheeler Jr. and Jimmy Ellis served as pallbearers. Survivors include his wife, Willodean Hix; daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Nathan Wheeler, Athens, and Patricia and Darrin Baxter and Suzanne and Frank Ellis, all of Danielsville; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Carolyn Tyner, Winterville; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Hix, Winder, and Ruth Pace, Colbert; and several nieces and nephews. He was also known as "Paw-Paw" to nine grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. Brown, 78, of Colbert, died Wednesday, November 24, 1999. Mrs. Brown was born May 3, 1912, a daughter of the late Harold and Esther Olander Long. She was a retired secretary accountant. Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband, Lodden Dupree Brown. Graveside services were held Friday, November 26, in Colbert Cemetery with the Rev. Don Fuller officiating. Survivors include one son, Craig Brown, Colbert; and one sister, Anita Northup, Iowa. Anderson Mrs. Mary Chafin Anderson, of Hull, died Wednesday, November 24, 1999. Mrs. Anderson was born in Oglethorpe County, a daughter of the late John R. Chafin and Sue Bell Arthur. She was a housewife and a member of Forest Heights Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Adult 3 Sunday School class and a choir member. Mrs. Anderson also served as a volunteer worker with St. Mary's Hospital, Athens. Funeral services were held Saturday, November 27, at Forest Heights Baptist Church with the Revs. Mike Purdy and Johnny Curry officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Survivors include her husband, Willard Anderson; two sons, Curtis Clark, Danielsville, and Bruce Clark, Watkinsville; two step-daughters, Diane Kesler, Nicholson, and Donna Hairston, Athens; one brother, Bobby Chafin, Danielsville; 10 grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 2, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Hulon Hill officiating. Burial will be in the Old Hull Cemetery, Madison County. Ferina Mrs. Edith McCannon Ferina, 80, of Carlton, died Sunday, November 28, 1999. A native of Oglethorpe County, Mrs. Ferina was a daughter of the late Charlie and Irene Tolbert Patton. She served as a volunteer for Oglethorpe County Senior Citizens and was a member of Burts United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the choir. Mrs. Ferina was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert McCannon, and her second husband, Anthony J. Ferina. Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 30, at Burts United Methodist Church. Burial was in McCannon Cemetery. Mark McCannon, Jason McCannon, Randy Smith, Dean Smith, Billy Chandler and Joe Ellis McCannon served as pallbearers. Survivors include three daughters, Annie Rose Cernick, Oklahoma City, Okla., Connie DeFazio, New Albany, Miss., and Brenda Spratlin, Hull; three sons, Bob McCannon, Brunswick, Eustace McCannon, Kiawah Island, S.C., and Roger McCannon, Elberton; one sister, Lena Wilson, Flowery Branch; one brother, Grady Patton, Nicholson; one half- sister, Meta Bridges, Crawford; 15 grandchildren, 14 great- grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Harris Mrs. Mary Gillespie Harris, 95, of Taylor, Mich., sister of Nell Norton, Comer, died Thursday, November 25, 1999. A native of Union County, Mrs. Harris was a daughter of the late Homer and Alice Owensby Gillespie. She was a former resident of Cornelia and was a retired supervisor with Sexton's Ice Cream, with 20 years of service. Mrs. Harris was a homemaker and a member of Cornelia Congregational Holiness Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Emory Harris. Funeral services were held Monday, November 29, in the chapel of Whitfield Funeral Home, Demorest. Burial was in Yonah Memorial Gardens. Survivors, in addition to her sister, include one son, James E. Harris, Taylor; sister, Geneva Crumley, Smyrna; one brother, Clarence James Gillespie, Adrian, Mich.; seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Nunn, 80, of Commerce, died Monday, November 22, 1999, at West Paces Ferry Hospital. A native of Banks County, Mrs. Nunn was born October 16, 1919. She was a daughter of the late O.G. and Sevilla Ward Fowler. Mrs. Nunn was a homemaker and a member of Commerce First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Nunn. Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 24, at Commerce First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Ellison officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce. Survivors include one son, Tommy Nunn, Commerce; one daughter, Delorse Baird, Commerce; three sisters, Lutrelle Bellew, Monticello, Estelle Patton, Commerce, and Evelyn Raymond, College Park; and seven grandchildren. Smith Jr. Larry Charles "Little Larry" Smith Jr., of Commerce, died Saturday, November 20, 1999. Mr. Smith was born December 20, 1977, at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, the son of Larry and Doris Smith, Commerce. He received his education in the Jackson County School System and was a 1998 graduate of Commerce High School. Mr. Smith attended Christian Worship Assembly in Hartwell under the leadership of Pastor Fred Vehe. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Sumner and Hazel R. Smith. Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 24, at New Faith Methodist Church, Commerce, with the Revs. Frank Earls, pastor, and Milton Mays officiating. Burial was in Johnstown Cemetery. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include three brothers, Kenyatta Smith and Anton Smith, both of Atlanta, and Renard Smith, Commerce; two sisters, Tiffany Smith and Angel Smith, both of Commerce; grandmother, Christine Adair, Dayton, Ohio; grand-uncle, Lloyd Smith, Commerce; and a host of aunts, uncles and other relatives and friends.
