Smith Harold N. Smith, 90, of Comer, died Thursday, November 18, 1999. Mr. Smith was born in Madison County, a son of the late Plummer and Inez Parham Smith. He was a retired farmer, owner of Smith's Barber Shop and was a member of Vineyard Creek Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Corine Kellum Smith, and two sons, Harold A. Smith and Fred R. Smith. Funeral services were held Saturday, November 20, at Vineyard Creek Baptist Church with his grandson, the Rev. Scott Smith, and the Rev. James Page officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Easham, Athens, and Annette Beck, Comer; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the charity of one's choice. Slaton Mrs. Celie Lee Slaton, 88, of Comer, died Tuesday, November 16, 1999. A native of Franklin County, Mrs. Slaton was a daughter of the late Eugene and Ophelia Berryman Harris. She had lived in the Comer area for most of her life and was a member of Meadow Baptist Church. Mrs. Slaton was preceded in death by her husband, James Clyde Slaton. Funeral services were held Thursday, November 18, at Meadow Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Slaton's grandsons served as pallbearers. Survivors include three daughters, June Guest, Roswell, Brenda Brittelli, Atlanta, and Linda Gentry, Comer; four sons, James Edward Drake, Norcross, Charles E. Drake and George A. Slaton, both of Danielsville, and Allen Slaton, Comer; one brother, Joe Harris, Lilburn; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Hardman Mrs. Beatrice McCraney Hardman, 74, of Linwood, N.C., formerly of Madison County, died Sunday, November 14, 1999, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Hardman was born May 12, 1925, in Caldwell County. She was a daughter of Hugh Douglas McCraney and Nora Lee Watts McCraney. Mrs. Hardman was a retired seamstress and a member of Reeds Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Regina Kay Hardman. Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 17, at Reeds Baptist Church with Dr. Dan R. Hutchins officiating. Burial was in Forest Hill Memorial Park. Survivors include her husband, Leo E. Hardman; son, Reggie Hardman, Linwood, N.C.; daughters and sons-in-law, Rita H. and Freddy Koontz and Beverly H. and Phillip McKinney, all of Lexington, N.C.; brother, Claude McCraney, Gastonia, N.C.; granddaughter and husband, Darin and Russell Buchanan; and grandchildren, Ashlee and Carin Koontz and Zane McKinney. Brooks Stanley Nathaniel Brooks, 47, of Arnoldsville, died Friday, November 19, 1999. A native of Clarke County, Mr. Brooks was a son of Mary Hill Bradberry, Lincolnton, and the late Claude Earl Brooks. Funeral services were held Sunday, November 21, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, with the Rev. Dan May officiating. Ronnie Fulcher, Buster Smith, Kevin Conway, Tim Christian, Coile Miller, Randy Holloway, Roy Dellinger, Donald Dellinger, Joey Fulcher and Joe Isler served as honorary pallbearers. "Goat" Archer, 64, of Athens, died Friday, November 19, 1999. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, Mr. Archer was a son of the late James Calvin and Bessie Lou Walker Archer. Graveside services were held Sunday, November 21, in the Attica Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Ronnie Healan officiating. Hammond Charles Dillard Hammond, 72, of Hull, died Monday, November 22, 1999. A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Hammond was a son of the late Daniel W. and Sidney H. Smith Hammond. He was a World War II veteran, having served with the U.S. Army, and was retired from Wilkins Industries, with 50 years of service. Mr. Hammond was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Athens and a member of AmVets Post #10 and the VFW Post #2872. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 24, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, with the Revs. Grady Wigley and James Haralson officiating. Entombment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Jim Beasley, Frank Whitley, Steve Smith, Van Holliday, William C. Smith and Sammy Escoe will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the AmVets Post #10. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mildred S. Hammond; two daughters, Vivian H. Beasley and Margaret H. Whitley, both of Monroe; one son, Charles Wayne Hammond, Monroe; two sisters, Allie H. Harrison, Lexington, and Lorena H. Dixon, Elberton; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A native of Madison County, Mr. Martin was born July 26, 1909. He was a son of the late J.T. "Bud" and Hettie Threlkeld Martin. Mr. Martin owned and operated Athens Furnace and Heating Sheet Metal Works until his retirement in 1974. He was a member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church. Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his wife, Golden Belle Scarbrough. Funeral services were held Sunday, November 21, in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Tom Lang officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Mr. Martin's grandsons and nephews served as pallbearers.
