Fortson Glenn F. Fortson, 72, of Hull, died Thursday, December 14, 2000. A native of Madison County, Mr. Fortson was born June 21, 1928, a son of the late Tom Ed and Lois McConnell Fortson. He was a retired insurance agent with American General Life Insurance Company and was a member of Hull Baptist Church. Mr. Fortson was presently employed with Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, as a funeral assistant. He was preceded in death by spouse, Betty Fortson, and spouse, Louise "Bootie" Fortson, and a son, Scott Fortson. Funeral services were held Sunday, December 17, at Hull Baptist Church with the Revs. Randy Crowe and Ray Jenkins officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park, Athens. Eddie Scarbrough, Lane Collins, Mike Moon, Robert Sloan, Billy Akins and Wallace Davis served as pallbearers. Survivors include his wife, Lorene Booth Fortson, Hull; one daughter, Susan Gravenor, Athens; three sons, Steve Fortson, San Diego, Calif., Mike Palmer, Carlton, and George "Butch" Palmer, Crawford; one sister, Hilda Strickland, Milner; two brothers, Ed Fortson, Danburg, and Jack Darrell Fortson, Colbert; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. "Jake" McElroy, 84, of Danielsville, died Monday, December 18, 2000. Born in Madison County, Mr. McElroy was a son of the late Ben and Susie Roberts McElroy. He was retired from maintenance with the University of Georgia and was a carpenter. Mr. McElroy attended Bethel M Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Johnnie Merle Booth McElroy, and a son, James Ronald McElroy. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 20, in the chapel of Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, with the Revs. Ray Jenkins and Robert Thomas officiating. Burial was in the Bethel M Baptist Church cemetery. Mr. McElroy's grandsons and nephews served as pallbearers. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ellen McElroy Sims, Danielsville; two sons, Troy Lee McElroy, Danielsville, and Gene McElroy, Jefferson; three sisters, Annie Sue Royston, Royston, Gladys King, Greenwood, S.C., and Florie House, Danielsville; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Woody Sr., 86, of Sylvester, died Thursday, December 14, 2000, at his residence. A native of Madison County, Mr. Woody had lived in Sylvester for the past 60 years. He was retired from the United States Postal Service, with over 40 years of service, having served the last eight years as postmaster in Sylvester. Mr. Woody was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Lawson Bible Class. Graveside services were held Saturday, December 16, in Hillcrest Cemetery with Dr. Tom Jacobs officiating. Mr. Woody is survived by his wife, Mildred Rhodes Woody, Sylvester; one daughter, Carol Woody Armour, Cleveland; one son, Paul T. Aaron Mrs. Grace Kenney Aaron, 86, of Athens, died Friday, December 15, 2000. A native of Clarke County, Mrs. Aaron was a daughter of the late Samuel P. and Georgia Kimsey Kenney. She had made her home in Oglethorpe and Clarke counties all of her life and was a member of Attica Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for a number of years. Mrs. Aaron was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph C. Aaron. Funeral services were held Sunday, December 17, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, Athens, with the Rev. John Davidson Jr. officiating. Burial was in the Attica Baptist Church cemetery. Dean Upchurch Jr., Enoch Aaron, Matthew Toole, Stanley Toole, George Smith Jr. and Dave Dowdy served as pallbearers. Belk Mrs. Diane Grizzle Belk, Hull, died Saturday, December 16, 2000, at her residence. Mrs. Belk was born February 16, 1946, in Franklin County, daughter of the late Virgil Roosevelt Grizzle and Elsie Gaddis Grizzle. She was a homemaker and a member of New Hope Worship Center. Funeral services were held Monday, December 18, at New Hope Worship Center with the Rev. Dennis Kesler and Raymond Duncan officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Hooper Mrs. Annie Adams Hooper, 90, of Ila, died Monday, December 18, 2000, at Saint Mary's Hospital, Athens. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Hooper was the daughter of the late Will and Lizzie Smith Adams and the widow of the late Willard Ray Hooper Sr. Mrs. Hooper was retired from Blue Bell and was a member of Erastus Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her son, Willard Ray Hooper Jr. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 20, at Erastus Christian Church with Billy Glosson and Keith Weekley officiating. Burial was in the Ila Cemetery. Pethel, 83, of Gainesville, died Thursday, December 14, 2000, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville, following an extended illness. A native and lifelong resident of Hall County, Mrs. Pethel was a daughter of the late William "Doc" Underwood and Louise Lawson Underwood. She was a homemaker and a member of Community Baptist Church. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 16, in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Home, Gainesville, with the Rev. Fulton Boswell officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Gainesville. Mrs. Pethel is survived by her husband, Haskell Pethel, Gainesville; son, Charles H. Pethel, Gainesville; sons and daughters-in-law, John Wesley and Martha Pethel, Danielsville, Billy Joseph and Gloria Pethel, Cleveland, and Robert and Inez Pethel, Gainesville; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Wall Mrs. Janie Ruth Carithers Wall, 86, of Comer, died Monday, December 11, 2000. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Wall was the daughter of the late William Jonie and Sara Elizabeth White Carithers. Mrs. Wall was a member of Meadow Baptist Church, and a member of the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class, the WMU, the Woodmen of the World Lodge 1415, and served as Sunday School teacher for many years of Meadow Baptist. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.M. Wall. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 13, at Meadow Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Dooley officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Deacons of Meadow Baptist Church served as pallbearers and members of the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class served as honorary pallbearers. Survivors include one daughter, Sara L. Wall, Comer; one brother, William Eugene Carithers, Milledgeville; two sisters-in-law, Geneva Parham and Ruby Wall; and several nieces and nephews.
