Harbin Hoyt H. Harbin, 81, of Commerce, retired former executive director of the Jefferson Housing Authority, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at his residence. Born in Gwinnett County, Mr. Harbin was a son of the late Thomas R. and Nancy Peavy Harbin. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Commerce. Mr. Harbin was a former member of the Commerce Kiwanis and Commerce Lions clubs and was a charter member of the Commerce Country Club. He also served as a former Commerce City Councilman. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 5, at the First United Methodist Church of Commerce with the Revs. Warren Huddleston and Tom Lewis officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Helen Miller Harbin; sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Judy Harbin, Commerce, and Keith and Shonda Harbin, Hull; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Gary Butler, Covington; one brother, Dr. Melton Harbin, Lake Junaluska, N.C.; and one sister, Mary Lou Bauer, Forth Worth, Texas. Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements. ---------------------------------------- The Madison County Journal, July 5, 2000 Gladys David Mrs. Gladys David, 91, of Nicholson, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce. Mrs. David was born February 9, 1909, in Madison County. She was a daughter of the late William Jackson and Sally Jane Matthews Burroughs. Mrs. David was retired from Colonial Poultry and was a member of Nicholson Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kinchen Emory David. Graveside services were held Tuesday, July 4, in the Nicholson Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Stowers officiating. Mrs. David is survived by one son, Robert E. David, Nicholson; one daughter, Mary Jane Hilley, Nicholson; and three grandchildren. Lois Seay Thompson, 82, of Athens, died Thursday, June 29, 2000. A native of Banks County and a long time resident of Athens, Mrs. Thompson was a daughter of the late Harwell and Bessie Johnson Seay. She was a retired supervisor with Thomas Textile and was a member of the 60 and More Club at Chapelwood Methodist Church. Mrs. Thompson was also a member of East Athens Baptist Church, where she was very active in the Senior Citizens Group and the Bykota Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Lonnie Thompson. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 1, at East Athens Baptist Church with the Revs. Don Leaptrott and David Shelley officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Wills Mrs. Bonnie Estelle Wills, 87, of Center, died Wednesday, June 28, 2000. A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Wills was a daughter of the late James Robert and Fannie Estelle Perry Miller. She was a homemaker and was a member of Center United Methodist Church and the UMWC. Mrs. Wills was preceded in death by her husband, William Monroe Wills. Funeral services were held Friday, June 30, at Center United Methodist Church with the Revs. Richard Cathy, Sanford Willard and Richard Broom officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Wills' grandsons, Roger Wills, Rick Wills, Andy Hawkins, Jason Wills, Doug Hawkins and Jonathon Wills, served as pallbearers. Survivors include two daughters, Estelle Wills Littleton, Comer, and Audrey Wills Hawkins, Center; three sons, Alfred Rogers Wills, Center, James William Wills, Sandy Cross, and Jeffery Weldon Wills, Macon; one step-son, Joe Dean Wills, Dublin; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Brooks John Herman Brooks, 90, of Bogart, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000. A native of Jackson County, Mr. Brooks was a resident of Oconee County for 53 years. He was a son of the late William Washington and Susie White Brooks. Mr. Brooks was retired from the Webb and Crawford Company and was a dedicated and active member of Mars Hill Baptist Church for 52 years, where he served as chairman of various committees. He served as a deacon for many years and was honored as deacon emeritus in 1996. Mr. Brooks was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Imma Logan Brooks, a great-granddaughter, Celest Medley, and a great- great-grandson, Jacob Medley. A memorial celebration was held Thursday, June 29, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, West, with the Revs. Don Fuller, Kenneth Glenn and Charles Jones officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Mr. Brooks' grandsons served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Mars Hill Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Myrl Fuller Brooks; daughter and son-in-law, Gwen and Bud Carson, Bogart; stepchildren and their spouses, Don and Sandra Fuller, Colbert, Charles and Kay Fuller, Athens, and Barbara and Wayne Evans, Moultrie; eight grandchildren, Teresa and Buck Williams, Watkinsville, Darrell and Beverly Sosbee Benjamin Fuller and Chip Fuller, all of Athens, David and Jo Evans, Florida, Johnny Carson, Bogart, Ricky Wages, Moultrie, and Wade Wages, Atlanta; 10 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and four special caretakers, Rhonda Ruark, Joanne Fambrough, Patty Nash and Rita Bray. The Madison County Journal, July 5, 2000 George G. Ward George Gordon Ward, 74, of Athens, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, following an extended illness. Mr. Ward was born in Ellijay and grew up in Atlanta. In 1944, his senior year at Boys High, he joined the USMC and saw active duty in the Pacific. A member of the Second Marine Division, Mr. Ward participated in combat on the island of Saipan, a major stepping stone in the war against Japan. He returned home after the war to complete his education, eventually earning a master's degree in journalism from the University of Georgia. After several additional years in the U.S. Army and Air Force, including stations in Germany and France during the Cold War, Mr. Ward returned to Atlanta and ended his career in civil service as chief of training at the IRS, a post which he resigned from for health reasons. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 6, at H.M. Patterson & Son Oglethorpe Hill, Atlanta. Burial will follow at Arlington Memorial Park. Mr. Gordon is survived by his wife, Marguerite Ward; daughter and son-in-law, Jo and Harry Rice, Danielsville; one sister, Virginia Brown, Woodstock; two grandchildren, George D. Ott, Jacksonville, Fla., and Kirsten M. Ott, Athens; one great-grandson, Tyler Matthew Ott; and nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time Thursday at Oglethorpe Hill. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Salvation Army or to the American Heart Association. H.M.
