Slay James Carl Slay, 78, of Comer, died Monday, January 29, 2001. A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Slay was a son of the late Eddie Carlton and Elizabeth Viva Dunn Slay. He was retired from the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Slay was later employed with the Georgia Farm Bureau and was a member of Collier Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Department. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, January 31, at Collier Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Charles Jenkins officiating. Mr. Slay's nephews served as honorary pallbearers. Survivors include his wife, Marion Slay; two daughters, Linda Collins and Nancy Graham, both of Comer; four sisters, Nell Seymour, Greenville, S.C., Beulah Fowler, Simpsonville, S.C., Alice Paul, Lexington, and Virginia Overstreet, Gadsden, Ala.; one brother, Monroe Slay, Greenville, S.C.; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Sorrow Danny Morgan Sorrow, 51, of Commerce, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at Athens Regional Medical Center. A native of Greenville County, S.C., Mr. Sorrow was born August 19, 1949, a son of the late James Verner Sorrow and Jenny Standridge Sorrow Waters. He was a carpenter and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Commerce. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 25, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. John Turlington officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce. Survivors include one son, Lee Sorrow, Commerce; one daughter, Jennifer Sorrow, Commerce; one brother, Bryan "Huck" Sorrow, Commerce; five step-sisters and one step-brother. Smith Mrs. Lula Bell Gresham Smith, of Athens, died Friday, January 26, 2001. A native of Oglethorpe County, Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late Edd and Minnie Hill Gresham. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Smith, two daughters, Catherine Hunter and Sarah Ann Smith, and four sons, James Hill, Paul Hill, John D. Dowdy and John Henry Smith Jr. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, January 29, at Clarke Grove Baptist Church, Stephens, with the Rev. Willie Harris officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Survivors include seven daughters, Sarah McGuire, Statham, Earline Smith, Columbia, S.C., Henrietta Smith and Annie Vincent, both of Athens, Ruby Dowdy, Los Angeles, Calif., Georgia Travis, Atlanta, and Murner Willoughby, Bethlehem; three sons, John Edward Smith, Colbert, Johnny Floyd Smith, Athens, and Joe Henry Smith, Chattanooga, Tenn.; two sisters, Lillian Eberhart and Laura Moore, both of Athens; one brother, Willie Edd Gresham, Forsyth; 23 grandchildren, 15 great- grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Jackson-McWhorter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. -------------------------------------------- The Madison County Journal, January 31, 2001 Mildred Parten Mildred Bullock Parten, 68, of Colbert, died Monday, January 29, 2001. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Parten was a daughter of the late Coke and Mary Pauline McCurly Bullock. She was a homemaker and seamstress and was of the Baptist denomination. Mrs. Parten was a member of the Liver Foundation. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, February 1, in Colbert Cemetery with the Rev. Don Fuller officiating. Survivors include one daughter, Cindy Williams, Com-merce; one son, Bruce Parten, Winder; two brothers, G.T. "Pete" Bullock, Danielsville, and Paul Bullock, Colbert; four grandchildren, four great- grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Liver Foundation, 75 Maiden lane, Suite 603, New York, NY 10038. The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville. Brock Mrs. Denise Beverly Brock, 34, of Homer, died Wednesday, January 24, 2001, at her residence. Mrs. Brock was born November 9, 1966, in Commerce, a daughter of Brenda R. Roberts, Homer, and the late David L. Clark. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 27, at Charity Baptist Church, Homer, with the Rev. Vaughn Howington officiating. Burial was in Grove Level Baptist Church cemetery. Mrs. Brock is survived by her husband, Joe Brock, Homer; two sons, Joey Brock and Timothy Brock, both of Homer; one brother, Matthew Wayne Clark, Danielsville; one sister, Donna Jean Carlyle, Danielsville; and grandmother, Ruby D. Clark, Danielsville. Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements. -------------------------------------------- The Madison County Journal, January 31, 2001 Clarence Sorrells Jr. Clarence (June) Sorrells Jr., 53, of Hull, died Wednesday, January 24, 2001, at Athens Regional Medical Center. A native of Madison County, Mr. Sorrells was a son of Myrtha L. Sorrells, Hull, and the late Clarence Sorrells Sr. He worked as a fork lift operator for Kendall Co. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 27, at Good Hope Baptist Church, Hull, with the Revs. C.M. Hawkins, Ronnie Gantt and Stanley Johnson officiating. Burial was in Sims Family Cemetery. Nephews and friends of Mr. Sorrells served as pallbearers, while nieces and friends served as flower bearers. In addition to his mother, Mr. Sorrells is survived by his wife, Mary Jo Sorrells; two daughters, Kessa M. Hitchcock (Tony), Hull, and Lisa R. Sorrells, Athens; two sons, Clarence Sorrells III, Hull, and Tony L. Sorrells, Athens; two sisters, Lavern Anderson and Ruby Sims (Jerry), both of Hull; six brothers, Clinton Sorrells (Nyotha), George A. Sorrells, Marion E. Sorrells (Georgia Ann), Larry Sorrells (Dorothy) and Hershel Sorrells (Pam), all of Hull, and James Lester, Athens; five grandchildren, Latoya K. Sorrells, T. Bianca and T. Brianna Hitchcock, both of Hull, Terin K. Shields and Desmond A. Sorrells, both of Athens; mother-in-law, Mary Smith, Athens; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Moena Haley (Alvin), Lula Mae Huff, James Henry Smith, Willie Rogers Smith and Bobby Lewis Smith; special friends of the family, Elizabeth Bush and Lisa R.
