A native of Albany, GA, he was a son of George Johnston of Tempe, AZ and the late Willamina Brown Johnston. Tom has had a long history of serving his neighbors, community and country. At age 16, he began his service as a volunteer firefighter in Bellevue, NE. His law enforcement career began as a dispatcher for the Sarpy County Sheriff's Department in Nebraska where he became a Deputy Sheriff at age 21. Tom received his Master's Degree in Public Administration from the University of Nebraska. For the past 18 years, Tom has served as a United States Secret Service Agent. He has received numerous awards and recognition for his outstanding service. Tom was dedicated to his local community. He served as a member of the Collins Hill High School Stadium Committee in Lawrenceville, GA. His friendship, kindness and generosity will be deeply missed. Funeral services will be Friday, March 2, 2001 at 12:00 Noon at Beech Haven Baptist Church with Chaplain (Colonel) William C. Graham, USAR Ret. officiating. Interment will be in Comer Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Greg Gaines, Frosty Plunkett, Charlie Chatham, Jeff Davis, Craig Snider and Russ Zeeb. Survivors in addition to his father include his wife, Carol Johnston; 2 sons, Alan Johnston of Lawrenceville and Jeffery Johnston of Athens; Sister, Jan Johnston of Higley, AZ and Aunt, Sister Edward Mary Brown of Leavenworth, KS. The family will receive friends at Beech Haven Baptist Church, Athens, Friday from 11:00 AM until 12:00 Noon. The body will lie in state at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, Danielsville, Thursday from 12:00 Noon until 9:00 PM.
