Brown, 86, of Ila, died Saturday, July 6, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Brown was born October 28, 1915, in Madison County, a son of the late Leonard and Daisy Hammond Brown. He was a retired peddler and was a member of Galilee Pentecostal Fire Baptized Holiness Church, in which he helped build 60 years ago. Mr. Brown was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Smith, seven sisters and one brother. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, July 8, at Galilee Pentecostal Fire Baptized Holiness Church with the Revs. Larry Dyer and Dennis Kesler officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Grace Kittle Brown, Ila; five sons, Jerry Brown, Hull, Jimmy Brown, Carnesville, Johnny Brown, Nicholson, Mike Brown, Commerce, and Steve Brown, Baldwin; seven daughters, Beverly Barnett and Pam Freeman, both of Ila, Shirley Burkhalter, Athens, Alisa Carter and Angela Hale, both of Nicholson, Lorena Gilbert, Lenoir, N.C., and Nancy Whitehead, Crawfordville; 38 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren and two great-great- grandchildren. A native of Madison County, Mr. Echols was the son of the late Howard and Essie Beard Echols. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a retired butcher. Mr. Echols was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Echols, and a daughter, Martha Lavada Ferguson. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 5, in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce, with the Rev. Dayton Logan officiating. Survivors include one son, David Fred Echols, Danielsville; one brother, William H. Echols, Foxboro, Mass.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Griffeth Mrs. Allie Lee Martin Griffeth, 80, of Danielsville, died Saturday, July 6, 2002. A native of Clarke County, Mrs. Griffeth was the daughter of the late Oness and Maude Ingram Martin. She was a member of East Athens Baptist Church and had been employed as an inspector with Gold Kist. Mrs. Griffeth was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Griffeth, and a daughter, Faye Griffeth. Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 8, in Oconee Hill Cemetery with the Rev. David Shelley officiating. Survivors include a grandson, Charles Griffeth, Danielsville; brothers, Otis Martin, Ormond Beach, Fla., and Callie Martin, Athens; and two great-grandchildren, Tyler Griffeth and Logan Griffeth, both of Danielsville. Cooper Stewart Dyson Cooper, 86, of Colbert, died Sunday, July 7, 2002. A native of Wilkes County, Mr. Cooper was a son of the late Lauren Wesley Cooper Sr. and Lula Bobo Cooper. He was a retired farmer who had been actively involved with livestock and was an active member of East Athens Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir. Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Brown Cooper. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, at East Athens Baptist Church with the Rev. David Shelley officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Cory Christian, Cleveland Christian, Chuck Townsend, Bob Cooper, Wesley Cooper, Jeff Parham, Fred Wendt and Mark Brannon served as pallbearers. Wilson Mrs. Peggy Gail Wilson, 61, of Commerce, died Monday, July 8, 2002, at Athens Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Wilson was the daughter of the late Vadie and Tishie Hawks Burroughs. She was a homemaker and was a member of Madison Street Baptist Church. “She was a second mother to many neighborhood kids through the years,” stated family members. “She will be greatly missed and always loved.” Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. She was co-owner of Wilkinson Trucking Company and was a member of Bold Springs Methodist Church.
