McMeans Sr. James O. McMeans Sr., 80, of Danielsville, formerly of Chamblee, died Sunday, September 8, 2002, at his residence. Mr. McMeans was born in Rogersville, Ala., on August 25, 1922. He was a son of the late Jester McMeans and Cora Grubbs McMeans. Mr. McMeans was a graduate of Georgia State University and was a retired accountant for the Internal Revenue Service. He was a member of the Commerce Church of Christ. In addition to his parents, Mr. McMeans was preceded in death by a son, Charles McMeans. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 11, in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Duluth, with Pastor Jeff Colson officiating. Mr. McMeans is survived by his wife, Martha Ruth McMeans, Danielsville; one son, James O. McMeans Jr., Danielsville; one daughter, Margaret Corder, Duluth; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements. ---------------------------------------------- The Madison County Journal, September 11, 2002 Stanley Strickland Wilford Stanley Strickland, 80, of Royston and East Point, died Thursday, September 5, 2002, at Southern Regional Hospital. Mr. Strickland was the son of the late Buford and Mary Esther McGarity Strickland, Vanna and Royston. He died due to complications of diabetes. Mr. Strickland was born in Vanna on October 2, 1921, and was a longtime resident of East Point. A carpenter and homebuilder by skill and trade, he was self-employed, working for Briarwood Realty in East Point and Atlanta Americana Hotel before retiring. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Strickland was a Corporal in the U.S. Army and a gunner and tank driver and proud member of the 807th Tank Destroyer Battalion under the command of Col. Carlton K. Smith (Ret.) in the ETO, which played a major role in the liberation of Metz, France, in 1944. He attended the battalion’s nationwide reunions, having attended 41 out of 45, and hosted three in Atlanta. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, September 9, in the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Michael Haley, Kirby Strickland, Dayton Strickland, Larry Haley, Neal Strickland and Brody Strickland served as pallbearers. Mr. Strickland is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Lillian Haley Strickland, Lavonia and East Point; daughters, Valora Strickland, Fairburn, and Alicia Strickland, currently of High Wycombe, England; brother and sister-in-law, Cyrus and Revonda Strickland, Royston; sister, Betty Esco, Orange Park, Fla.; sisters -in-law, Louise Strickland, Vero Beach, Fla., Charlene Strickland, Jacksonville, Fla., and Ruth Strickland, Royston; numerous nieces and nephews on both sides of the family, Charles Strickland, Vero Beach, Fla., Debbie Finch, Greensboro, Kirby Strickland, Danielsville, Neal Strickland, Royston, and Mrs. Esco’s children, Surecia, Maria, Angie and Howie. He was preceded in death by a brother, George, who died as a toddler, his adult brothers, Fred, Decatur, twin brothers, Edward and Howard, Decatur and Danielsville, respectively, and Pat, Royston. Thompson Mrs. Ruth Power Thompson, 92, of Colbert, died Tuesday, September 3, 2002. Born in Madison County, Mrs. Thompson was a daughter of the late Jim and Minnie Brown Power. She was a retired textile worker from Colbert Manufacturing and was a member of Colbert Baptist Church for over 50 years. Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her husband, Troy Thompson. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 5, at Colbert Baptist Church with the Revs. Rip Goss, John Messara and Tom Lang officiating. Burial was in the Colbert Cemetery. Davis, 62, of Crawford, died Monday, September 9, 2002. A native of Barrow County, Mr. Davis was a son of Frances Jackson Davis, Statham, and the late R.B. Davis. He was a route salesman with Lance Foods and was a former employee of Flowers Bread Company. Mr. Davis was a member of Welcome Avenue Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Davis. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 12, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, Athens, with the Revs. Bruce Kesler, Bud McDonald and Wesley Edwards officiating.
