Drake Mrs. Edna Mae Drake, 76, of Hull, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002. Born in Oconee County, Mrs. Drake was a daughter of the late J.W. and Mattie Mae Mozell Bowman. She was a textile worker with Puritains Cordmill in Athens, and was of the Holiness denomination. Mrs. Drake was preceded in death by a son, Grady Drake. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Macedonia Holiness Church with the Revs. Roy David Sorrows and William Anglin officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Ricky Davis, Cory Davis, Jamie Thurmond, Johnny Scarborough, Thorne Fortson and Wayne Nelms served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Morgan Mena and Braxton Hill. Chandler Mrs. Mary Minish Chandler, 57, of Commerce, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at Athens Regional Medical Center of an extended illness. Mrs. Chandler was the daughter of Cecile S. Minish, Commerce, and the late Ferris Minish. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, July 18, at Erastus Christian Church with the Rev. Carl Beckhman, Leroy Wallace and the Rev. Sliauter, 49, of Comer, died Saturday, July 13, 2002. Born in Clarke County, Mrs. Sliauter was a daughter of Ruth Casey Greene and the late Hubert Greene. She was of the Baptist denomination. Mrs. Sliauter was preceded in death by a son, Billy Shannon Carter, a brother, Charles Greene, and a sister, Joyce Nelley. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In addition to her mother, Mrs. Sliauter is survived by a daughter, Shelly Smith, Comer; three sisters, Jonell Bryant and Peggy Parham, both of Hull, and Ginga Cullison, Ila; four brothers, Henry Greene, David Greene, Edward Greene and Bobby Greene, all of Hull; and five grandchildren. Dennis Phillips, of Graniteville, S.C., died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at his home. The Rev. Phillips was born in Madison County, a son of the late Merritt and Evie Lou Royston Phillips. He had lived in Graniteville for the past 33 years and served as pastor of Christian Heritage Church in Graniteville for all but two years since 1969. Mr. Phillips was a member of the Midland Valley Security Federal Advisory Board and received the Order Of The Palmetto, a Proclamation signed by Governor Jim Hodges. The award, which was given as a surprise during a church service on March 24, is the highest award a civilian can receive in South Carolina. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Christian Heritage Church with Dr. Herbert Carter and the Rev. Wayne Hicks officiating. Born in Franklin County on October 2, 1937, Mr. Chastain was a son of the late W.C. and Annie Nell Black Chastain. He was a truck driver for 44 years and was a past member of the Georgia National Guard. Mr. Chastain was of the Church of God faith. Mrs. Scarborough was born in Oglethorpe County on August 31, 1922. She was a daughter of the late John Franklin and Maude Strickland Woods. Mrs. Scarborough was a homemaker and was of the Baptist denomination. She was the wife of the late Jewell Benjamin Scarborough. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Scarborough was preceded in death by four brothers, Roy, Robert, Frank and Ed Woods, and two sisters, Mazelle Gearing and Lois Conklin. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, at Friendship Baptist Church with the Revs. Randall Porter, Larry Bennett and Jack Bowen officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Burroughs Ms. Sara Mae Burroughs, 85, of Athens, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002. A native of Madison County, Ms. Burroughs was a daughter of the late Thomas A. and Clara Fannie Spratlin Burroughs. She was retired from the textile industry as an inspector and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Athens. Ms. Burroughs was preceded in death by a sister, Rebecca E. Burroughs, and three brothers, Harry A. Burroughs, Leroy Burroughs and Spurgeon Burroughs. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 18, at Trinity Baptist Church with the Revs. Cecil Holcombe and Ray Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Echols Jr. Ralph Tolbert Echols Jr., 74, of Royston, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at Athens Regional Medical Center. Mr. Echols was born in Wilkes County on March 15, 1928. He was a son of the late Ralph Tolbert Echols Sr. and the late Ella Ree Carlton. Mr. Echols worked as a Structural Engineer contracted by Speed Check Company located in Atlanta. He retired at the age of 62, then built his retirement home on acreage with a stream in Royston. “This was his lifelong dream,” said family members. “He traveled and worked all over the United States and Canada, and even traveled as far as Hawaii. He enjoyed his travels very much and talked of his trips often.” Mr. Echols’ hobbies included target shooting, reading and taking care of his dream home. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Standard. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, in the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, with the Rev. Rick Standard officiating. He was a retired farmer, a member of the Hart County Republican Party and charter member and officer of the Take Back Georgia organization of Hart County. Mr. Ayers was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church and the Men’s Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the Georgia Antique Engine Club.
