Steele James Armell Steele, 76, of Comer, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002. Born in Oglethorpe, Mr. Steele was a son of the late James Calvin and Janie Bridges Steele. He had been employed with Bi-Lo in Commerce, and was a member of Comer Methodist Church. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 15, in the chapel of Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, with the Rev. Glen Guest officiating. Burial was in the Glade United Methodist Church cemetery. Michael Steele, Marshall Patton, Keith Headspeth, Danny Lord, Robert Guest and Robert Bridges served as pallbearers. Mr. Steele is survived by his wife, Jo Nell Patton Steele; one daughter, Vivian Steele, Comer; two brothers, Richard Steele, Comer, and Charles Steele, Danielsville. Wilbanks Mrs. Bertha Lee Massey Wilbanks, 85, of Commerce, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002. Mrs. Wilbanks was retired from Blue Bell Manufacturing and was a retired dietitian for Commerce High School and BJC Medical Center, Commerce. She was also a member of Cabin Creek Baptist Church. A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Wilbanks was the daughter of the late Lester and Emma Alexander Massey. She was preceded in death by her brother, Sanford Massey. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 13, at Cabin Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Troy Herbert and Terry Smith and Dr. Bill Ross officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. A native of High Shoals, Mrs. Burrell was a daughter of America Lavonia Burrell, Athens, and the late Fred Carlos Burrell. She had lived in the area all of her life and was retired from the University of Georgia. Mrs. Burrell was a member of East Athens Baptist Church and served as a volunteer for Athens Biscayne Room. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 17, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, with the Revs. Howard Conine and Joe Dooley officiating. She was retired from the textile industry and was a member of Liberty Community Church, Danielsville. Mrs. Bone was preceded in death by her husband, J. Howard Bone. Nolen Mrs. Eva Louise Scoggins Nolen, 68, of Greensboro, N.C., died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Moses-Cone Hospital after a short illness. A native of Marshill, N.C., Mrs. Nolen was the daughter of the late D.W. and Glenn R. Scoggins. “Louise was affectionately known as ‘Mamaw’ by many, as she had operated a day care center for several years in Greensboro,” family members said. Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 15, in West Memorial Gardens, Weaverville, N.C., with the Rev. Bruce Lax officiating. Mrs. Nolen is survived by her husband, James E. Nolen, Greensboro, N.C.; daughters, Mary Suzanne Scoggins and Jena Kirkman, Greensboro, N.C.; step-son, Kenneth Nolen, Mercerburg, Pa.; step-daughter, Wendy Rivers, Lake City, Fla.; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Evelyn Scoggins, Danielsville, and Eddie and Judy Scoggins, Atlanta; sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Charles Conyer, Danielsville; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Strickland Daniel Lee Strickland, 48, of Commerce, died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce. Mr. Strickland was an employee of the City of Commerce, with 27 years of service. He was a son of the late Frank and Marjorie Shook Strickland, and was preceded in death by twin sons, Rodney and Ronnie Strickland. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, at Ridgeway Baptist Church with the Revs. Bill Manus and Douglas Duncan officiating. Burial was in the Ridgeway Baptist Church cemetery.
