Sexton Doyle Ray Sexton, 77, of Danielsville, died Friday, February 22, 2002, at his home. Mr. Sexton was born in Franklin County on July 11, 1924, a son of the late Christopher Lonnie and Lillie Miller Sexton. He was a retired farmer and was of the Baptist denomination. Mr. Sexton was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Murray. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 24, in the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, with the Revs. Ray Jenkins, Tim Peek and Marvin Coffee officiating. Burial was in the Jones Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery. Mr. Sexton is survived by his wife, Lucille Dove Sexton, Danielsville; two sons, Terry F. Sexton, Ila, and Ricky Sexton, Danielsville; two brothers, James E. Sexton, Athens, and Kenneth Sexton, Greensboro; two sisters, Louise Carey, Danielsville, and Dorothy Fowler, Atlanta; two grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. Wood Joe Boyd Wood, 74, of Comer, died Wednesday, February 20, 2002. A native of Madison County, Mr. Wood was the son of the late George and Mary Brown Wood. He had been employed at Comer Motor Company and served as former chief of the Comer Fire Department. Mr. Wood was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and was a member of New Hope Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of Woodmen of the World. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 22, at New Hope Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Wesley Weaver and Calvin Coile officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Scogin was a homemaker and was of the Baptist denomination. She was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Cowart. Wheeler, 57, of Athens, died Thursday, February 21, 2002. A native and lifelong resident of Athens, Mrs. Wheeler was a daughter of Willodean Hix, Athens, and the late Herman E. Tyner. She was a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church, a member of the Joy Club and served as chairperson of the Benevolence Club. Patton Mrs. Jewell Simmons Patton, 88, of Comer, died Sunday, February 24, 2002, at Comer Health Care Center. Mrs. Patton was born in Madison County, on November 9, 1913. She was a daughter of the late Clifford and Janie Dudley Simmons. Mrs. Patton was a retired seamstress and was a member of Vineyards Creek Baptist Church, where she served as church pianist for 25 years. Her husband was the late Melvin Patton. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 26, at Vineyards Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Dewitt Waters and Calvin Coile, and granddaughter, Donna Arrowood, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Patton’s grandsons, Donnie Patton, Tommy Patton, Chris Chasteen, Harold Simmons, Kenneth Wood, Mike Patton, Jimmy Patton and Todd Arrowood, served as pallbearers. Leachman, 73, of Athens, died Sunday, February 24, 2002. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Leachman was a daughter of the late Harvey and Mary Elizabeth Rumsey McClane. She was a homemaker and was a member of Whitehall Baptist Church. Mrs. Leachman was preceded in death by a son, Blaine Hunsinger. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 27, in the chapel of Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, with the Rev. Buford Lockman officiating. Burial was in the Hunsinger Family Cemetery. (Ed) Collins, 70, of Braselton, died Thursday, February 21, 2002, at Ashton Woods Nursing Home in Atlanta. Mr. Collins was a retired UAW employee with GM in Doraville, and was a member of the Hoschton Church of God. He was a graduate of Braselton High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Mr. Collins was the son of the late Asa Collins and the late Mae Davis Cooper. His step-father was the late Guy Cooper. He was preceded in death by a son, Harold D. Collins, and a half-brother, Levi Collins. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 24, at the Braselton Church of God of Prophecy with the Revs. Melvin Cramer and Billy Gaddis officiating. Helton Mrs. Mary Frank Jackson Helton, 54, of Rex, formerly of Danielsville, died Sunday, February 24, 2002, at her residence. Mrs. Helton was born April 9, 1947, in Athens. She was a daughter of Inez Jackson, Commerce, and the late T.J. Jackson. Mrs. Helton was a retired school teacher with Rex Elementary School. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 28, at Collier Baptist Church, Comer, with the Revs. Connie Ivester and Richard Helms officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors, in addition to her mother, include one daughter, Susan Barnes, Stockbridge; two sisters, Martha Ivester, Elberton, and Angela Watkins, Hartwell; and nieces and nephews.
