Bryant Mrs. Dorothy Elizabeth Bryant, 72, of Comer, died Thursday, February 28, 2002. A native of Barrow County, Mrs. Bryant was a daughter of the late Virgil Morrow Sr. and Essie Elizabeth Whitehead Morrow. She lived in the Atlanta area until 1997, then moved to the Comer area. Mrs. Bryant had worked as an account auditor with the State of Georgia Department of Transportation and was a member of Comer Baptist Church. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 3, in the Madison Chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, Danielsville, with the Rev. Stuart Lang officiating. Burial was in the Comer Cemetery. Bond Ethan Matthew Bond, infant son of Kevin Paul and Amy Faye Bush Bond, Danielsville, died Friday, March 1, 2002. Ethan was born in Clarke County. Private services were held Monday, March 4, at the home of Paul and Charlotte Bond. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include a sister, Reagan Dakota Bond, Danielsville; grandparents, Jimmy and Jean Matthews, Union, S.C., Rick Bush, Albertville, Ala., and Paul and Charlotte Bond, Danielsville; and great-grandparents, W.F. Mrs. Fortson was born January 2, 1914, a daughter of the late Edge and Jennie Beatenbaugh Carey. She was a homemaker and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. Mrs. Fortson was preceded in death by her husband, John Grady Fortson, a daughter, JoAnne Atkinson, a granddaughter, Teresa Atkinson, four brothers, Albert, Candler, Hershel and Alton Carey, and two sisters, Mary Modie Crowe and Ila Mae Carey. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Revs. Dayton Logan and Glenn Guest officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Wilson Felmet Nicholas Wilson, 85, of Greenville, S.C., formerly of Athens, died Wednesday, February 20, 2002. A native of Canton, N.C., Mr. Wilson was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Lewis Wilson. He was a pilot, flying commuter flights along the East Coast. Mr. Wilson moved to Athens in the 1930s, where he trained military pilots, designed and built single-engine aircraft and helped establish commuter service at Athens-Ben Epps Airport. He retired in 1986 as a supervisor from Champion International-Dairy Pak, with 33 years of service. Mr. Wilson attended Lexington Presbyterian Church for more than 20 years. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth “Lisa” Wilson King, Colbert, and Gail Wilson Hosea, Greer, S.C.; one son, Brian Wilson, Bogart; one step-son, Mack Edwards, Piedmont, S.C.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. ----------------------------------------- The Madison County Journal, March 6, 2002 Hortense Benton Miss Hortense Benton, 92, of Commerce, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce. Miss Benton was a daughter of the late Thomas Homer and Sara Elizabeth Harris Benton. She was born March 26, 1909, in Jackson County. Miss Benton was a member of Cabin Creek Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and pianist for 39 years. She worked for 43 years with the Commerce Telephone Company, serving as switchboard operator, chief telephone operator and supervisor. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, March 4, at Cabin Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Vickery officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Survivors include three sisters, Zelma Williams, Lavonia, Allene Harris, Hartwell, and Annette Richey, Commerce; and several nieces and nephews. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Carithers was a daughter of the late Arthur and Bessie Collins Griffith. She was retired from the Credit Bureau of Athens. Mrs. Carithers was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Carithers. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, March 4, in the Comer Cemetery with the Rev. Stan Sizemore officiating. Mrs. Carithers is survived by nieces and nephews. Mr. Fortson was born in Madison County on June 26, 1930, a son of the late Lee and Ruth Crowe Fortson. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia and was a retired stock broker with Dean Witter. Mr. Fortson was also a cattle farmer and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 1, in the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, with the Revs. Dayton Logan and Tim Peek officiating. Mize, 84, of Homer, died Wednesday, February 27, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Mize was born in Georgia on September 24, 1917. He was a son of the late Ernest B. and Willie Murray Mize. Mr. Mize was a retired machinist, having worked in the textile industry, and was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Homer. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 1, at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church with the Revs. Ralph Smith and Shane Wilson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Cofer was a daughter of the late Berry A. and Ina B. Faulkner Seagraves. She was a retired nurse and was a member of Central Baptist Church. She was also a member of V.F.W. Post 2872 Auxiliary. Mrs. Cofer was preceded in death by her husband, Tucker Cofer. Williams Robert Donald Williams, 65, of Athens, died Monday, February 25, 2002. A son of the late John H. and Mary V. Morgan Williams, Mr. Williams was born in Clarke County. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a retired maintenance supervisor with Central Soya and Harrison Poultry. Mr. Williams was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a member of the American Legion. Baxter Terry Edward Baxter, 18, of Commerce, died Thursday, February 28, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Baxter was the son of Terry Lee and Ann Baxter, Commerce. He attended Madison County High School and was employed as a vaccinator with Gold Kist Poultry. He was of the Baptist denomination. Mr. Baxter was preceded in death by his grandfather, Eddie L. Baxter. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 2, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Jimmy Owensby officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce. In addition to his parents, Mr. Baxter is survived by his fiancée, Meghan Bennett, Commerce; sister and brother-in-law, Angelia Baxter Cowart and Paul Cowart, Commerce; and grandparents, Pauline Baxter and Roy and Barbara Strickland, all of Commerce. McDonald Mrs. Edith Mae Miller McDonald, 90, of Maysville, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at BJC Nursing Home, Commerce. Mrs. McDonald was born January 4, 1912, in Banks County. She was a daughter of the late Will and Ada Ragsdale Miller. Mrs. McDonald was a retired bookkeeper from Belks in Commerce and served as City Clerk of Maysville. She was a member of Maysville United Methodist Church. Mrs. McDonald was preceded in death by her first husband, Bill Thompson, her second husband, G.L. Oldham, her third husband, W.C. McDonald, and a brother, Bryant Miller. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Edwin Smith officiating. Burial was in Sunrise Cemetery, Maysville.
