Tyner William H. Tyner, 65, of Royston, died Saturday, November 8, 2003. A native of Madison County, Mr. Tyner was a son of the late C.J. and Louise Bond Tyner. He was a member of Danielsville United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 15, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, Danielsville. Mr. Tyner is survived by his wife, Diane Tyner, Commerce; daughters, Melanie Tyner Jones, Athens, and Laura Tyner, Cartersville; son, William Keith Tyner, Commerce; brother, Bond Tyner, Gainesville; two grandchildren, William Joshua Jones and Leah Brittany Tyner; one great-grandchild; and one nephew, Greg Tyner, Stockbridge. Johnson Mrs. Linda Jo Strickland Johnson, 60, of Bowman, died Wednesday, November 5, 2003, at Elbert Memorial Hospital in Elberton. Mrs. Johnson was born in Franklin County on June 11, 1943, the daughter of the late Boyd Comer and Georgie Pulliam Strickland. She was a seamstress and a member of Faith Baptist Church. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Parks Warren Johnson. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, November 7, in the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, with the Rev. Mrs. Duncan was born in Jackson County on April 13, 1933. She was a daughter of the late Floyd and Josie G. Rider Gaddis, and was twice married, first to the late Clarence Barrett, and second to the late Robert Duncan. Mrs. Duncan was a homemaker and of the Holiness denomination. She was preceded in death by three sons, William, Charles and Jimmy Lee Barrett, one daughter, Betty Bassett, one brother and one sister. She was employed as an Equipment Aid with Halifax Hospital in Dayton Beach, Fla. Mr. Nelms was born in Madison County on April 30, 1918, a son of the late W.E. and Jessie Sartain Nelms. He was a retired Peace Officer of 23 years and was a member of Royston Baptist Church. Mr. Nelms was a lifetime member of the Harrison McCreary V.F.W. Post in Royston, and of the Royston Masonic Lodge. He was a former Sheriff of Franklin County and a former Police Chief of Royston. Mr. Nelms was a United States Army veteran of World War II, serving in Germany from 1942 to 1945. He was a Prisoner of War for six months. Mr. Nelms was preceded in death by four brothers, Zan, Sam, Clyde and Ralph Nelms. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, November 9, at Royston Baptist Church with the Revs. Craig Bowman, Byron Greene and Martin T. Coile officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Royston. Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, was in charge of arrangements. --------------------------------------------- The Madison County Journal, November 12, 2003 Lessie McCay Mrs. Lessie Peeler McCay, 93, of Lakesite, Tenn., died Wednesday, November 5, 2003, in a local hospital. A native of Athens, Mrs. McCay had been a resident of Chattanooga, Tenn., and a member of First-Centenary United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. As Lessie Belle Peeler, she graduated from Athens High School and the University of Georgia with concentrations in Home Economics and Ceramics. She taught Home Economics for four years at Madison County and Clarke County High Schools. She was a graduate student at Virginia Tech in Home Economics and was enrolled in advanced study classes in ceramics at Arrowment School in Gatlinburg. Additional pottery studies were at Ohio State University and Kansas State University at Emporia. At the Chattanooga YWCA she taught the Pottery course for eight years, showing many new friends the techniques of shaping, tooling, decorating, glazing and firing pottery. She entered many juried shows, including the Mississippi River in Memphis, Tenn., and the Piedmont Craftsmen in Winston-Salem, N.C., where she won the “Purchase Award” of Wachovia Bank. She was an active participant in Fannie Mennen’s “Plum Nelly” Lookout Mountain shows for 17 years. She shared art shows with Professor Gail Hammond at the UTC George Cress Gallery and with Vivian Kell Hixson, Dunlap, Tenn., at Julies Gallery in Hixson. For three years she was invited to demonstrate “pottery throwing” at the Pioneer Skills show at Falls Mill near Belvedere, Tenn. She was a charter member of Intown Gallery of Chattanooga and a member of the Tennessee Artists Association and of the Foothills Guild of Oak Ridge. As a member of Piedmont-Craftsmen of Winston-Salem, she was invited to share that group’s show in Madison Square Garden. She served a two-year term on the Tennessee Arts Commission. Helen Bullard, author of CRAFTS AND CRAFTSMEN OF THE TENNESSEE MOUNTAINS stated, “Her pots and casseroles and other clay objects have been exhibited at juried shows throughout the Mid-South.” She was preceded in death by her parents, Otis Hiram Peeler and Hattie Williams Peeler, and a brother George Peeler, all of Athens. Duncan Benjamin Thornton Duncan, 87, of Fremont, Calif., died Saturday, October 11, 2003, at Fremont Care Center. Mr. Duncan was born in Canon on April 17, 1916. He was a 20-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps and served in the Pacific during World War II. Mr. Duncan worked in the Aerospace Industry in Arizona and California. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, November 13, in Rose Hill Cemetery, Royston, with the Rev. Eldon Massey officiating.
