Hooper John Kannie Hooper, 89, of Danielsville, died Monday, October 13, 2003. A native of Towns County, Mr. Hooper was the son of the late John Heith and Georgia Rose Bullock Hooper. Mr. Hooper was a World War II United States Navy veteran, serving on the USS Norton Sound. He was retired from Harmony Mills and was of the Baptist denomination. Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 15, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, Danielsville, with the Rev. Buford Lockman officiating. Howell Edward Lee Howell, 87, of Commerce, died Tuesday, October 14, 2003, at BJC Medical Cen-ter, Com-merce, of an extended illness. A native of Lumpkin County, Mr. Howell was the son of the late Eli and Alice Key Howell. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Howell was a retired maintenance supervisor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Mae Loggins Howell, and four children, Donald Howell, Dillard Howell, Doris Linkous and Judy Nation. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 16, at Harmony Christian Church with the Revs. Dennis Kesler and Jerry Payne officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Smith was born August 26, 1928, a son of the late Walter Lee and Monnie Pearson Smith. He was employed in the textile industry and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a son, L.C. Smith, six brothers, Edgar, Lony, Curtis, Samuel, William and Virgil Smith, and two sisters, Margie Griffin and Deler Hackett. Cobb Mrs. Essie Ruth Lewis Cobb, 86, of Danielsville, formerly of Hartwell, died Monday, October 13, 2003, at Athens Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Cobb was born in Stephens County on October 24, 1916. She was a daughter of the late Paul and Mary Gordon Lewis. Mrs. Cobb was a homemaker and a member of Price Chapel Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Marshall Cobb Jr., a granddaughter, Kimberly Graham, a sister, Bertha O’Dell, and four brothers, Curtis, Chandler, Boyd and Loyd Lewis. Moody Mrs. Molly Myers Moody, 78, of Alto, died Monday, October 13, 2003, in Asheville, N.C., from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born in Clay County, N.C., on May 6, 1925, Mrs. Moody was a daughter of the late Albert Bert Myers and Leasie Hogsed Myers. She was the wife of the late Thomas Zack Moody Sr., and was preceded in death by a son, Tommy Moody. Mrs. Moody was a homemaker and of the Baptist denomination. She was a musician and she and her sisters were known as The Myers Sisters Band. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 16, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, with the Rev. Scott Ledbetter and David Terrell officiating. Burial will be in Yonah Memorial Gardens. West Charles Henry West, 54, of Watkinsville, died Tuesday, October 7, 2003. Mr. West was the son of Anna Jones West and the late Jessie West. He served his country in the Vietnam Conflict as a soldier in the United States Marine Corp. Mr. West was involved in the Oconee County Little League Association as a coach and manager and was an active supporter of the Oconee County High School Baseball Program. He was of the Baptist denomination. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 11, at Beech Haven Baptist Church with Dr. Stewart Simms and the Revs. Larry Davidson and Odell Elrod officiating. Ethridge James Aldon Ethridge died Friday, October 10, 2003, at his home in Comer, after a long illness. He was surrounded by family members and close friends. Mr. Ethridge was born in Mt. Zion, near Sparta, on December 28, 1913, the son of William Marrion and Dora Dalton Ethridge. He was the last survivor of a family of 14 children. Mr. Ethridge graduated as a valedictorian from Sandersville High School in the class of 1933, and later graduated from Mercer University in Macon, with the honor of Magna Cum Laude. After graduate work at the University of Richmond in Richmond, Va., Mr. Ethridge taught Chemistry and Math at Brewton Parker College in Mt. Vernon. He joined the Civil Service in 1940 as an ammunition inspector, working for the Department of the Army. In that capacity, he and his family took assignments in numerous places in the United States, as well as overseas assignments in Japan and Turkey. Mr. Ethridge retired in 1972 after completing a 9-year assignment in Alaska. He and his wife, La Trelle, then returned to Georgia, making their home in Comer. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 13, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, Danielsville, with the Rev. Mike McLemore, of the Comer and Danielsville United Methodist churches, officiating. Dr. Alice Rogers, of Emory University, assisted. Burial was in the Comer Cemetery. Mr. Ethridge is survived by his wife of 61 years, La Trelle Ethridge; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Marty Ethridge, Houston, Texas, and their children, Carol Anne and David; son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Marsha Ethridge, their daughter, Lanie La Trelle Mason, her husband, Peter, and their daughter, Carlee, all of Mead, Wash.; and by a number of cousins, nieces and nephews. He was a self-employed truck driver and was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Royston. Mr. Hosteller was preceded in death by a step-son, Joe Akins. She was a daughter of the late Jeff and Madgie Wilson Brown. Mrs. Cash was a retired seamstress, with 17-1/2 years service at Empire Manufacturing Company, and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Cash, a son, Jackie Dean Cash, and a host of brothers and sisters. Jordan Thomas Franklin Jordan, 82, of Bowman, died Tuesday, October 7, 2003, at Cobb Memorial Hospital. Mr. Jordan was born in Hart County on June 7, 1921, a son of the late Gordon and Mattie Siegler Jordan. Mr. Jordan served in World War II as a member of the United States Navy Seabees. He was a self-employed store owner and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He was also a member of Primrose Masonic Lodge #79 in Bowman. Mr. Jordan was preceded in death by a brother, Penie Jordan, and a sister, Marietta Bryant. She was retired from Oxford Manufacturing and was a member of Webbs Creek Baptist Church. Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her husband, Wilmer W. Martin, two daughters, Sandra Hector and Martha Martin, a sister, Bertha Morrison, and a brother, Homer Eubanks.
