Born January 24, 1934, in Jackson County, Mrs. Haggard was a daughter of the late George Roy and Lillie Mae Smith Evans. She was a retired bookkeeper and a member of Blacks Creek Baptist Church. Campbell, 67, of Colbert, an award-winning architect and strong conservationist who made major contributions to the Athens Community, died Sunday, September 14, 2003, at home on his beloved Woodlake near Colbert after a long struggle with lung cancer. Co-winner of a 1991 Community Revitalization Award for contributions to the Athens landscape, Mr. Campbell also won awards for the design of Timothy and Winterville Elementary schools and for the Earth Shelter addition at Barnett Shoals Elementary School. “Among the many other structures that he meticulously and creatively designed,” said family members “he was proudest of the Athens Community Council on Aging, Athens First Bank and Trust (Jefferson Road), Bishop Park Recreation Building, Boys Club of Athens, Cedar Shoals Stadium, Smith-Boley Office Building (Athens) and the Executive Park Motel Tower (Atlanta).” “The belief that ‘We do not have domination over this earth, but stewardship’ was manifested in a professional integrity that was linked to the conservancy of this earth,” family members added. “The personal importance of earth and life to him is reflected in his Woodlake development, where he continued to plan and supervise.” Mr. Campbell was born April 8, 1936, in Montgomery, Ala., the son of W.C. Campbell and Cora Harris Campbell. He graduated from Talladega (AL) High School and from Auburn University, with a degree in architecture. A member of the American Institute of Architects, Mr. Campbell worked as an architect for 33 years, first at Sterling Wilhoit, and then primarily in private practice in the Athens area, spending the final two years of his career with the University of Georgia Office of University Architects. He was preceded in death by a son, Brian Carson Campbell, his father, W.C. Campbell, and a brother, Gerald Campbell. A memorial service will be held at the residence, 591 Johnny McElroy Road, Colbert, at 4 p.m. Sunday, September 21, with Dr. Franklin Duncan officiating. Mrs. Evans was a homemaker and a 20-year Hospital Auxiliary Volunteer with St. Mary’s Hospital. She also served four years as a representative for the Silver Haired Legislature. Mrs. Evans was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James R. Evans, her parents, Early and Lillie Herring, a sister, Mozell Hix, two brothers, Grady and Roy Herring, and a niece, Barbara Ann Meadow.
