Bridges Donald Neal Bridges, 78, of Danielsville, died Tuesday, December 24, 2002, at his home. Mr. Bridges was born in Madison County on November 1, 1924, a son of the late N.H. and Kate Meadow Bridges. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a farmer. He was of the Baptist denomination. Mr. Bridges was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Parham Bridges, and a half-brother, Garland Bridges. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 26, in the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, with the Rev. James Tolbert officiating. Burial was in the Meadow Baptist Church cemetery. Johnny Bridges, Grady Echols, Roger Ownbey, Wallace Spearman, Eugene Green and Dwane Hines served as pallbearers. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Stanley and Detsy Bridges, Danielsville; daughter, Judy Bridges, Danielsville; brothers, Charlie Bridges, Athens, Marvin Bridges, Danielsville, and Calvin Bridges, Comer; half-sister, Grace Spearman, Greenville, S.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Tucker Mrs. Geraldine Lord Tucker, 80, of Athens, died Tuesday, December 24, 2002. A native of Morgan County, Mrs. Tucker was a daughter of the late Oscar and Ollie Tanner Lord Tucker. She was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Lord. Mrs. Tucker was a member of Hull Baptist Church. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 26, at Hull Baptist Church with the Revs. Randy Crowe and Johnny Tucker officiating. Burial was in Colliers Cemetery. Dwayne Berrong, Don Berrong, Phil Thrasher, Michael Nelms, Marty Tucker and Phil Davis served as pallbearers. Mrs. Tucker is survived by her husband, Howard “Sammy” Tucker, Athens; daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Ed Nelms, Colbert, Peggy and Roger Thrasher, Hull, and Barbara and David Berrong, Watkinsville; son and daughter-in-law, Buddy and Faye Tucker, Carlton; brothers, Jack Lord, C.P. Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, Athens, was in charge of arrangements. ------------------------------------------- The Madison County Journal, January 1, 2003 Robert C. ‘Charlie’ Segers Robert Charles “Charlie” Segers, 67, of Baldwin, died Monday, December 23, 2002, at his residence following a sudden illness. Mr. Segers was born August 10, 1935, in Habersham County, a son of the late Clifton and Mary Pearl Higgins Segers. He was employed by Pop’s Painting as a residential and commercial painter. Mr. Segers was preceded in death by two brothers, Nesbit “Pop” Segers and Lewis Segers, and a sister, Ovalene Holden. Survivors include one daughter, Jennifer Segers, Cumming; three sisters, Sylvia Sanders, Comer, Rachel Segers, Cumming, and Paulette Brown, Newborn; and one brother, Wilkie Segers, Ellijay. No funeral services are scheduled at this time. Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, was in charge of arrangements. ------------------------------------------- The Madison County Journal, January 1, 2003 William A. ‘Will’ Sorrells William A. “Will” Sorrells, 86, of Danielsville, died Wednesday, December 25, 2002. A native of Madison County, Mr. Sorrells was a son of the late William Clinton and Bertha Stevens Sorrells. He was retired from the former Transcontinental Gas Pipeline, was a lifelong farmer and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and treasurer. A local historian, Mr. Sorrells authored Growing Up At The Foot Of Booger Hill. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a five time Master of John H. Jones Masonic Lodge. Mr. Sorrells was preceded in death by his wife, Annis Hardman Sorrells. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 28, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, Danielsville, with the Rev. Kenneth Segars officiating. Burial was in the Old Danielsville Cemetery with Masonic Rites. Chris Tanner, Jeff Tanner, Greg Mason, Clint Mason, Maurice Wardlaw and Stanley Sorrells served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were members of the John H. Jones Masonic Lodge. Survivors include three daughters, Rebecca Sorrells McMillan, Columbia, S.C., Ramona Sorrells Mason, Royston, and Joyce Sorrells Ray, Stone Mountain; son, Stephen Hardman Sorrells, Comer; brother, Walter C. Sorrells, Perry; nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, Danielsville, was in charge of arrangements. ------------------------------------------- The Madison County Journal, January 1, 2003 Sam Roach Sr. Sam Roach Sr., 58, of Cleveland, died Wednesday, December 25, 2002, at Habersham County Medical Center following a brief illness. Born in Habersham County on October 7, 1944, Mr. Roach was a son of Leathey Shirley Roach, Cleveland, and the late Clemson Roach. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Vietnam, and retired after 20 years of service. Mr. Roach was a recipient of the Good Conduct Medal with Silver Clasp, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea), the Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Campaign and Service Medals, the Army Occupation Medal (Berlin) and the National Defense Service Medal. He also received three Overseas Service Ribbons, the Army Service Ribbon, the NCO Professional Development Ribbon, two O/S Bars, the Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, the Sharpshooter Badge Rifle M16, the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Army Commendation Medal (Oak Leaf Cluster). After his retirement from the military, Mr. Roach worked for the Vinnell Corporation for 12 years in Saudi Arabia. He was a member of VFW Post #7720 and was of the Baptist denomination. Mr. Roach was preceded in death by a brother, Tommy Roach. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 28, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, with the Rev. W.A. Jenkins officiating. Burial was in the VFW Memorial Cemetery with full military honors. In addition to his mother, Mr. Roach is survived by his wife, Diane Alexander Roach, Cleveland; son and fiancée, Samuel “Sam” Roach Jr. and Pam Carpenter, Cornelia; son, Perry Shirley, Cleveland; son and daughter-in-law, David and Marie Roach, Fredricksburg, Md.; daughter and son-in-law, Sonya and Reggie Hix, Alto; brother, Ellis “Benny” Roach, Comer; and grandchildren, Jake Shirley, Ashley Roach, Justin Roach, Easton Singleton, Samuel Roach III, Lauren Roach and Ashley Carpenter. New Mrs. Eva Mae New, 81, of Colbert, died Monday, December 23, 2002. A native of White County, Mrs. New was a daughter of the late Joseph and Julia Mae Jackson Thompson. She was a retired seamstress and of the Baptist denomination. Mrs. New was preceded in death by her husband, Paul New. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, December 27, in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home, Athens, with the Revs. Ray Jenkins and Herman Nations officiating. Burial was in Athens Memory Gardens. Ken Elrod and Clark McCarty served as pallbearers. Survivors include a son, Herschel Elrod, Colbert; two sisters, Beulah Hammond, Colbert, and Elouise Randall, Christmas, Fla.; a brother, Allen Thomas, Colbert; five grandchildren 11 great- grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. A native of Madison County, Mr. Hudson was a son of the late Luther Parks and Decie Lorine Dixon Hudson. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a retired machinist. Mr. Hudson was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Athens. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Haaf Hudson. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 29, in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Elmer Butler officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Hudson’s nephews, Danny Campbell, Dwayne Campbell, Will Campbell, Marvin Gooch, Ralph Gooch and Billy Hudson, served as pallbearers. Survivors include a son, Michael Louis Hudson, Milledgeville; daughters and sons-in-law, Freda and Landon Mitchell, Anniston, Ala., and Patricia and Danny Nix, Colbert; daughters, Judy Hudson, Nicholson, and Phyllis Hudson, Danielsville; step-son, James Fielding, Hull; step-daughters, Margaret Boles, Mary Brown and Janet Moon, all of Hull; brother, Edward Hudson, Madison Heights, Mich.; sisters, Lorine Fields, Hull, and Margie Crawford, Nicholson; his former wife, Billie Jean Hudson; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
