A native of Madison County, Mr. Patterson was the son of the late Lester Cleo and Rosa Lou Daniel Patterson. He was the owner of Pat’s Gun Repair and had been a gunsmith at Franklin Sporting Goods. Mr. Patterson served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and was a member of Woodmen of the World. He was also a member of Meadow Baptist Church. Graveside memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 22, in Colbert Cemetery with the Rev. Ervin Goss officiating. Mr. Patterson is survived by his wife, Jane Butler Patterson; sons and daughters-in-law, Randal and Lynn Patterson, Suwanee, Wayne Patterson and Angie, Colbert, and Wade Patterson and Melissa, Comer; sisters, Eunice Drake, Norcross, Lalage Irwin, Los Angeles, Calif.; and seven grandchildren. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Chandler was born October 23, 1927. She was a daughter of the late Hoyal S. and Mamie Lois Burroughs Brooks. Mrs. Chandler retired after 30 years from St. Mary’s Hospital, Athens, and attended Colbert United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 21, at Colbert United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Haralson officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Mrs. Duncan was a retired supervisor with Ty Cobb Health Care and had worked at Tugaloo Home Health Care Company. She was a member of Royston Baptist Church and a member of the Royston-Franklin Springs Lion’s Club. Mrs. Duncan was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Elijah Duncan, and a brother, Grover Dudley. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 17, in the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, with the Revs. Byron Greene and Danny Barton officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Royston. Mrs. Garrett was born April 1, 1916, in Elbert County, a daughter of the late Thomas and Susie Campbell Drake. She was a homemaker and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Madison County. Mrs. Garrett attended the Madison County Senior Citizens Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Jason Garrett, one grandson, Richard “Richie” Wooten, and several brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 22, in the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, with the Revs. James Creason and Leon Suttles officiating. Burial was in the Bethel M. Baptist Church cemetery. Barber Charlie John Barber, 73, of Winder, died Monday, January 20, 2003. Mr. Barber was born in Walton County. He was a retired heavy equipment operator and a member of High Shoals Holiness Church. He was also a teacher in the Rev. Joe C. Dickens Bible Class. He was a minister of the gospel since 1967 and was a loving father to everyone, said family members. Mr. Barber was preceded in death by his parents, Bevert L. Barber and Alice Waters Barber. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 23, in Smith Memory Chapel of Smith Funeral Home, Winder, with the Rev. Waymon Whitehead officiating. The body will lie in state beginning at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in Barrow Memorial Gardens. Mr. Barber is survived by his wife, Carolyn Barber, Winder; son, Keith Barber, LaBelle, Fla.; daughters, Jonnie Selph, Ft. Mrs. Rhodes was a native of Jackson County and had resided in Clarke County for most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Julius Owen and Eula Emma Burns Dunson. Mrs. Rhodes and her husband, the late J.M. “Mack” Rhodes, were the former owners of the Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. of Athens. She was a member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church and the Faith Sunday School Class. Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 22, at Prince Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Ricketts officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Rhodes’ grandsons and great-nephews served as pallbearers. Mr. Fitzgerald was born in Palo Alto County, Iowa, on March 27, 1933, a son of the late Edward Stephen and Lorie Marjorie Ricke Fitzgerald. He was a 20-year retiree of the U.S. Navy, working as an E-6 Operations Specialist, and served in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. Mr. Fitzgerald was a member of Vanna United Methodist Church and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge #1655 in Fredericksburg, Va. He was an avid R.V. traveler and had supervised campgrounds for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Strom Thurmond Lake. A memorial service was held at noon Saturday, January 18, at Vanna United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sharon Waters officiating. Mr. Fitzgerald is survived by his wife, Rosie Felts Fitzgerald, Royston; sons, John Harold Fitzgerald II, Minnesota, and Kevin Lewis Fitzgerald, Royston; daughters, Lue Ann Arzola, Virginia Beach, Va., Myra Keefer, Fredericksburg, Va., and Cheryl VanBuren, Orlando, Fla.; nine grandchildren, one great-grandson, four brothers and four sisters. A native of Greenville, S.C., Mr. Phillips was a son of the late Frank and Olive Duncan Phillips. He was a longtime resident of the Comer area and was a member of New Town Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School and served as a deacon. Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Cline and Mary Gravley, and two brothers, Wallace Phillips and Joe Phillips. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 20, at New Town Baptist Church with the Revs. Johnny Guest, Chuck Black and James Yeargin officiating. Burial was in Carlton Cemetery. Hart, 74, of Royston, died Monday, January 20, 2003, at Cobb Memorial Hospital in Royston. Mr. Hart was born September 26, 1928, in Franklin County, a son of the late John Walter and Allene Cornelia Cromer Hart. He was retired from Oliver Rubber Company, with 36 years of service, and was a member of Zidon Baptist Church. According to family members, he enjoyed cutting pulpwood and cotton farming. Mr. Hart was preceded in death by three brothers, John Will Hart, Leon Hart and James Hart. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, January 22, at Zidon Baptist Church with the Revs. Vernon Dorminy and John Swanger officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Corey Hart, Michael (Dusty) Hart, Chad Patterson, Dustin Shirley, Michael Steele and Jacob Duval served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Tony Martin, Mike Martin and Kenneth Carle.
