Steed Louis Melvin Steed, 83, of Hull, died Friday, August 1, 2003. Born in Elma, Wash., on July 23, 1920, Mr. Steed was a son of the late Edward P. and Bertha Schmach Steed, Williamsburg, Ohio. Mr. Steed worked at Pearl Harbor from November 1941 to October 1945. He was a veteran of World War II with the Military Police Criminal Investigation Detachment in Honolulu, Hawaii. Mr. Steed received his Bachelor and Master of Arts Degrees from the University of Hawaii. He was the Director of Radio Broadcasting at the university and was on the staff of the 1958 Orientation Center for Foreign Students. In 1960, Mr. Steed received a Fulbright Grant to teach English at a teachers college in Bangkok, Thailand. He served 22 years with the United States Information Agency as Foreign Service Officer, serving in Thailand, Vietnam and Bogota, Columbia. His last post was with The Voice of America, Washington, D.C., and he retired in July 1980. He lived in Georgia for 22 years. Memorial services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, August 7, at Colbert United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Haralson officiating. Mr. Steed is survived by his wife, Winona Kealalio Steed, Hull; son, Paul Kimo Steed, Lafayette, La.; daughter, Malia Lianne Vincent, Leesburg, Fla.; three granddaughters, Abby Lianne Steed-Bragg, Sabrina Marie Vincent and Ashley Christina Vincent, all of Lafayette, La.; one grandson, Garrett Kimo Vincent, Lafayette, La.; sister, Edna Seagraves, Ft. Mrs. Wehunt was born in Marshall County, Ala., on June 9, 1948. She was a daughter of Mary Sue Piotrowski, Carnesville, and the late Edward Gerald Wilson, and the step-daughter of the late Blondell Ham Wilson. Mrs. Wehunt was an office manager. She was preceded in death by a brother, Kelly Gerald Wilson. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, August 4, in the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, with the Rev. Born in Elbert County, Mrs. Kellum was the daughter of the late George and Myrtle Sexton Todd. She was the wife of the late Jesse Lee Kellum. Mrs. Kellum was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 5, at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Gregory Kellum officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Verner Wilson, 79, of Athens, died Saturday, August 2, 2003. Born in Banks County, Mr. Wilson was a son of the late Thomas and Eddie Lord Wilson. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bonnie Fitzpatrick Wilson. Mr. Wilson was retired from Oliver Rubber Company, with 32 years of service. Following his retirement, he was employed as a dealer transfer driver with University Ford-Lincoln-Mercury. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Wilson served with the Seabees in the South Pacific. He was a member of American Legion Post #20, the VFW, the Moose Club and the Hardee’s Breakfast Club. He was also a member of Providence Baptist Church. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 5, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, Athens, with the Rev. Albert Vaughn officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Johnny Fitzpatrick, Mike Woods, Bobby Anderson, Billy Styron, Stanley Hunter, Harry Wilson and Wayne Edins served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Jack Thornton and members of the American Legion Post 20. Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife, Frances C. Wilson; son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Sylvia D. Howington, 83, of Nicholson, a former member of the Jackson County Board of Commissioners, died Saturday, August 2, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Howington was born August 20, 1919, in Jackson County. He was the son of the late Henry A. and Lela Smith Howington. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Howington was a retired poultry and cattle farmer and a member of Nicholson Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows and Hudson Lodge #294. Mrs. Johnson was born in Oglethorpe County, January 14, 1918, a daughter of the late Raliegh William and Nellie Elizabeth Tucker Gabriel. She was a homemaker and a member of Clouds Creek Baptist Church. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, James Maryland Johnson Sr. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 7, at Clouds Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Dayton Logan and Hoyt Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Welcome Avenue Church Cemetery. Mrs. Johnson’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Survivors include a son, James M.
