Mr. Hatta-way was born April 13, 1931, in Madison County. He was a son of the late Robert L. Sr. and Florida Mae Curtis Hattaway. Mr. Hattaway was a heavy equipment operator and attended Old Canon Baptist Church. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 10, in the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, with the Revs. Jack Evans and Ray Jenkins officiating. Burial was in the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, Danielsville. Mr. Hattaway’s grandsons served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Pruitt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. --------------------------------------------- The Madison County Journal, February 11, 2004 Captain Calvin Dudley Sr. Captain Calvin Chester Dudley Sr., 78, of Royston, died Monday, February 9, 2004, at Cobb Memorial Hospital in Royston. Captain Dudley was born in Hart County on December 19, 1925, son of the late John Luther and Cora Amelia Allen Dudley. He retired from the United States Navy in 1978 and founded the first rural home health agency in Georgia. At present, he was executive vice-president of Care Partners @ Home, located in Lavonia. He was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Hartwell. During Captain Dudley’s service in the United States Navy, he served as the Executive Officer of The Cruiser USS NORTHHAMPTON, the President’s Flagship. He received many authorized medals, including: Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal (with Bronze Star), the Navy Occupation Medal plus the Merchant Marine Atlantic War Zone Bar, the Mediterranean/Middle East War Zone Bar and the Merchant Marine Combat Bar. Captain Dudley dedicated many hours in services to various areas of health care and local business organizations. The organizations he worked with included the Board of Directors of the American Federation of Home Health Agencies; the Officers Club for the U.S. Forces Europe Stuttgart Germany; Georgia Ninth District Community Action Agency; Lavonia, Georgia Chamber of Commerce; Greater Macon, Georgia Chamber of Commerce; Bibb County Georgia Training Center; Georgia Federal/Military Retiree Coalition; Georgia Ninth District Community Action Committee; Georgia Health Care Providers Council; Georgia Coalition for Health Care; United Way of Georgia Health Care Providers Council; and the Georgia Coalition for Health Care. In addition to his service in various organizations, Captain Dudley also held office in many of the groups. He served as president of the Georgia Federal/Military Retiree Coalition and the Retired Officers Association (Northeast Georgia Chapter), vice president of the Georgia Association of Home Health Agencies, director of the Georgia Association of Home Health Agencies, and chairman of the Governmental Affairs Georgia Association of Home Health Agencies, the Georgia State Home Health Advisory Board, the Zoning Appeals Board of Royston and the Gulf Coast Quad State Medicare Advisory Committee (Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida). He was the first chairman of the Macon-Bibb County “76” Bicentennial Committee and was vice-chairman of Governmental Affairs Georgia Association of Home Health Agencies. In 2002, he received a 4-Way Test Award from the Royston-Franklin Springs Rotary Club for exemplary community service. Captain Dudley was also the founder of the Retired Officers Association — Northeast Georgia Chapter, and director of the Cub Scouts of America in the United Kingdom. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and V.F.W., a member of the National Retired Officers Association National and the National Association for Uniformed Services. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason. Captain Dudley is survived by his wife, Joyce Brenda McKenzie Dudley; two brothers, John L. Dudley, Rock Hill, S.C., and Steve S. Dudley, Virginia Beach, Va.; one sister, Jane Ford, Royston; nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and his extended home health family. Captain Dudley was preceded in death by a son, Calvin Chester (Skipper) Dudley, a brother, Grover Dudley, and a sister, Ruby Duncan. Funeral services will be announced at a later date. The body is at Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, where the family was to have received friends from 1 to 3 p.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. The family is at the home of Dr. William and Edwina Ford, 233 Virginia Hills Road, Royston. Flowers are optional for the visitation and welcomed at the time of the funeral service. McCurley Garnett Thomas McCurley, 84, of Crawford, died Friday, February 6, 2004. Born in Madison County, Mr. McCurley was the son of the late William Thomas and Nancy Elizabeth Evans McCurley, Colbert. He was the husband of the late Kathleen Brooks McCurley. Mr. McCurley was a World War II veteran, having served in the United States Army, and was a member of Colbert Baptist Church. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 8, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, Athens, with the Rev. Richard Norman officiating. Burial was in Athens Memory Gardens. Born June 15, 1915, in Madison County, Mrs. James was the daughter of the late J. Pat Crowe and Loutisha Graham Crowe. She was employed with Cannon Mills Co., Plant 1, wash cloth department, for 53 years until her retirement. She was a member of Centerview Baptist Church, Kannapolis, and had been a resident of the area since 1936. Mrs. James had strong political feelings for the Democratic party and had been active with the local chapter in Cabarrus County throughout the years. She was a member of the Young at Heart senior citizens group at Bethpage Presbyterian Church in Kannapolis, and was a charter member of the Bethpage Home Extension Club. “She was affectionately known as ‘Maw Maw James,’” said family members. Mrs. James was preceded in death by her husband, Felton John James, who died December 3, 1978, and a son, John Neal James, who died in 1992. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 1, in the chapel of Whitley’s Funeral Home, North Carolina, with the Rev. Willie Rash officiating. Burial was in Carolina Memorial Park. Mr. Jordan was a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Army, and worked with Reliance Electric of Athens. Mrs. Akins was a retired waitress and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Hartwell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall P. Akins, two grandsons, David Wayne Akins and Joseph Bryant, a brother, Tom Chandler, and two sisters, Mary Becker and Frances Lewis.
