Hancock Mrs. Pamela K. Hancock, 50, of Ila, died Thursday, March 18, 2004. A native of Gastonia, N.C., Mrs. Hancock was a daughter of Harvey Lee and Marjorie Bone Kent, Athens. She was employed with Athens Regional Medical Center and was of the Baptist denomination. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 21, in Evergreen Memorial Park with the Rev. Maxwell Stanley Clyde Maxwell, 47, of Pelion, S.C., died Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at his home. Mr. Maxwell was born in Royston on July 27, 1956. He was the son of the late Clyde and Kathleen Brown Maxwell. Mr. Maxwell was employed in installation for 21 years and was a member of Pelion Baptist Church. Born in Athens, Mr. Bales was a son of the late Clinton R. and Jenny Mae Bales. He was the husband of the late Marion Bales, and was preceded in death by twin infant daughters, Wanda Maureen and Delores Anne Bales, and a sister, Margie Dike. Wilson Wendell Lewis Wilson, 52, of Nicholson, died Sunday, March 21, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center. Born April 23, 1951, in Jackson County, Mr. Wilson was a son of G.W. Wilson, Nicholson, and the late Nancy Mozelle Howington Wilson. He was a graduate of Piedmont College, where he was a member of the Sports Hall of Fame. Mr. Wilson was employed by the Physical Plant at the University of Georgia. Mrs. Parham was born in Madison County on August 30, 1916. She was a daughter of the late Thomas F. and Jennie Phillips Bryant. Mrs. Parham worked in the textile industry and was a homemaker. She was a member of New Hope Worship Center and attended the Senior Adult Sunday School Class. Mrs. Parham was preceded in death by her husband, Buford J. Parham, a son, Thomas Melvin Parham, four brothers and four sisters. Born in Franklin County on April 9, 1931, Mr. Fowler was a son of the late Hoyt and Lois Hill Fowler. He had worked as a pulpwood cutter and retired from the City of Royston. Mr. Fowler was preceded in death by two sisters, Nobie Lee Fowler and Peggy Fowler, and a brother, D.J. Fowler. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 21, in Oakview Cemetery, Canon, with the Revs. Johnny Ashworth and Paul Hood officiating. Survivors include two brothers, Ernest Fowler, Royston, and Douglas Fowler, Bowersville; and several nieces and nephews. Toole Mrs. Mattie Mae Toole, 84, of Winder, died Monday, March 22, 2004. Born in Oconee County, Mrs. Toole was a daughter of the late Will and Alva Bradshaw Butler. She was the wife of the late John Henry Toole, and was preceded in death by two sons, William Boyd Toole and Bobby Ray Toole Sr., a step-son, Joel Toole, three brothers, Calvin Butler, Will Henry Butler and Marvin Butler, and a sister, Florene Marlowe. Mrs. Toole was a homemaker and of the Baptist denomination. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 26, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home, Winder, with the Revs. Mike Freeman and Robert Gaddis officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Fortson Harvey Lat Fortson died Sunday, March 21, 2004, ending a long battle with a kidney disease. Mr. Fortson was born May 15, 1921, the second child to Lillian Elizabeth Fortson and Delancey Latt Fortson, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lizzie Fortson, a grandson, Michael Wayne Helwig, and two brothers, Quillian and Doyle Fortson. Mr. Fortson fought in World War II and worked as a sheet metal mechanic. He retired from the Georgia State Department of Transportation in 1986, and lived in Winterville with his daughter following his wife’s death in 1988. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, at Doves Creek Baptist Church, Elberton. Burial was in the Winterville Cemetery. Mr. Fortson’s grandsons, David Helwig, David Morris and Brent Mathis, cousins, Cecil Oglesby and A.B. Gaines, and nephews, Wayne Barger and Donald Fortson, served as pallbearers. Mr. Fortson is survived by his former wife, Elizabeth Ruff Fortson, Winterville; son, Kenneth Martin Fortson, Carlton; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Ricky Miller, Winterville; grandchildren, Melissa and David Morris, Colbert, David and Teresa Helwig, Winterville, and Alyson and Brent Mathis, Elberton; great- grandchildren, Samantha Nicole Fisher, Brittany Alexandria Helwig, Chase William Helwig and Devin Michael Helwig, Winterville, and David Joshua Morris, Colbert; and numerous nieces and nephews. Martin Joe Guyton Martin, 90, of Anderson, S.C., died Friday, March 19, 2004, at Brighton Gardens, Greenville, S.C. Born March 24, 1913, in Anderson County, S.C., Mr. Martin was a son of the late Arthur M. Martin and the late Mamie Murphy Martin. He retired from Duke Power Company, with 50 years of service, and was associated with The McDougald Funeral Home, Anderson, S.C., for more than 46 years. He was a lifetime member of the Lions Club and the Lebanon Masonic Lodge, where he was past Worshipful Master. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Anderson, S.C., and was a charter member of the Baracca Sunday School Class. Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Martin, a brother, Calvin Martin, and a sister, Eva Martin. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 21, in the chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Hayes officiating. Entombment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Anderson, S.C. Survivors include a son, Larry J. Martin, Easley, S.C.; daughters, Sarah C. Bach, Fort Wayne, Ind., and Doris M. Jennings, Rock Hill, S.C.; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Mr. Martin is also survived by Elizabeth Brooks, Anderson, S.C., who was reared in the home.
