He was born January 6, 1914, in Comer, Madison County, and was the son of the late Marcus and Myrtle Thompson Floyd. Mr. Floyd was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Concord, N.C., a former Kayser Roth Hosiery shipping foreman, an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing his vegetables with neighbors and friends, according to family members. He was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta Haynes Floyd, and two grandchildren. Survivors include a son, Richard Marcus Floyd, Fenwick Island, Del.; daughter, Judy Carol Floyd Kluttz, Concord, N.C.; brother, Howard N. Floyd, Danielsville; grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn Weston and Richard Marcus Floyd, Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Brittany, Ricky, and Ethan. Born in Franklin County, he was the son of Mrs. Azalee Bennett Beatenbough, Royston, and the late Ides (Dub) Beatenbough. He was a maintenance worker at Overhead Door, a member of the Price Chapel Church of God, and a veteran of the United States National Guard. Marshall Roach Marshall Dennis Roach, 82, of Royston, died Saturday, September 25, 2004, at Hospice of the Upstate in Anderson, S.C. Born in Franklin County July 18, 1922, he was a son of the late Ruffus and Janie Hickman Roach. He was a farmer and retired bus driver with the Franklin County School System. Mr. Roach attended the Zidon Baptist Church, was formerly a member of the Franklin County Cattleman’s Association, and was founding member of the Sandy Cross Volunteer Fire Department. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Cromer Roach, granddaughter, Cathy Bruce, and several brothers and sisters. Survivors include sons, Ronnie and Dennis Roach, both of Royston; daughters Phylis Ward and Gail Jones, both of Hull; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one step-grandchild; and two step-great-grandchildren. She was born in Franklin County, August 30, 1947, the daughter of Mrs. Helen McClain Garner of Canon, and the late Charlie Garner. Mrs. Simmons was retired from Johnson & Johnson. Survivors include fiancee, Edd Berkoben, Cordell; brothers, Ray Garner, Dewy Rose, Ricky Garner, Royston, and David Garner and Dale Garner, both of Canon; sisters, Myrtle Mealor, Royston, Brenda Scarborough, Carnesville, and Beverly Bennett, Canon; special aunts, Willie Mae Shelton, Canon, and Edna Scott, Hartwell; 11 nieces and nephews; and 11 great-nieces and nephews. Betty Nell Pulliam Betty Nell Winkler Pulliam, 65, of Lavonia, died Sunday, September 26, 2004, at her home. She was born in Oconee County, S.C., on June 16, 1939, the daughter of the late Oscar and Exie Winkler. Mrs. Pulliam worked in the textile industry as a machine operator and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Lavonia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Hubert Pulliam, brother, Hubert Winkler, and sister, Julie Winkler. Grizzle Sr., 88, of Statham, died Friday, September 24, 2004. Born in Jackson County in 1916, he was the son of the late Ottis Roscoe and Catherine Cornelia Wages Grizzle. He returned to Statham in 1998 after having lived in Albany for many years and was a retired salesman for the Continental Moss Gordon Company. Mr. Grizzle was a veteran of the United States Army in World War II, where he received the Purple Heart, distinguished service medal, and seven Bronze Stars. He was a member of the Statham American Legion, Elks Club, VFW, and the Republican Party. He was preceded in death by children, Lewis Howard Grizzle Jr., and Patrick H. Grizzle, a grandson, Cody Dutton, brother, Samuel Quilla Grizzle, and a sister, Louise Morgan. Survivors include his wife, Betty McClain Grizzle, Statham; three daughters, Judy Hardin, Atlanta, Janice Dutton, Statham, and Joy Kitchen, McKinney, Texas; grandchildren, Howard Grizzle, Beth Martin Landress, Katie Hardin, Kari Hardin, Kelly Hardin, Travis Dutton, and Patrick Kitchen; great-grandson, Ben Landress; and two sisters, Frances Thornton, Statham, and Betty Perkins, Hull. Helen Cromer Helen Gertrude Whitsel Cromer, 88, of Kannapolis, N.C., died Thursday, September 23, 2004, at Big Elm Nursing Center after being in declining health for four years. She was born July 17, 1916, in Franklin County, a daughter of the late James Crawford Whitsel, Sr. and the late Alice Franklin Whitsel. She was employed with Cannon Mills Co. Plant 1, Spinning Room 7, for 50 years until her retirement. Mrs. Cromer was a member of Royal Oaks United Methodist Church, in Kannapolis, and had been a resident of the area since the early 1940s. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hershel (Jake) Comer, who died March 15, 1985, three brothers, Robert Lee Whitsel, Watson Whitsel, and Jewell Whitsel. Survivors include a daughter, Elaine Whitten, Kannapolis; two grandchildren, Jessica Whitten, Kannapolis, and Cody Whitten, Sparta, Mo.; two great-grandchildren, Mataya Reynolds and Christian Reynolds, both of Kannapolis; four brothers, Loy Whitsel, and J. He was a native of Commerce, and was a heavy machine operator and long distance truck driver. Mr. Carlan was preceded in death by his father, Fred Carlan, and a brother, Dale Carlan. Survivors include his mother, Genell Vaughn Carlan, Homer; daughter, Kristen Ann Carlan, Carnesville; two brothers, Mike Carlan, Homer, and Freddie Carlan, Gillsville; and sister, Marie Carlan, Homer. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Mary Lou Coile; his mother; son, Thomas Melvin Coile, Jr., Sparta; daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and Carson Beckett, Lawrenceville; two brothers, Ray and Ronnie Coile, both of Comer; and four grandchildren, Thomas and Lauren Kirby, and Taylor and Tanner Beckett.
