Griffeth Phillip Crawford Griffeth, 69, of Colbert, died Friday, March 26, 2004. A native of Madison County, Mr. Griffeth was the sixth of seven children born to the late John W. and Bonnie Clyde Kesler Griffeth. He was a lifelong member of Moon’s Grove Baptist Church in Colbert. Mr. Griffeth graduated from Danielsville High School and served in the United States Army, stationed in Fort Polk, La. As a young man, he drove a truck for the Eli Witt Company and worked with his uncle, Wyatt Griffeth, in his grocery business. In 1956, Mr. Griffeth formed Griffeth Brothers Tire and Recapping in Danielsville, which later moved to Athens and operated as Griffeth Brothers Tire Company on 238 W. Hancock Avenue for a number of years. He retired as a president of University Tire Company, Athens, and was a full-time farmer, husband, father, brother and grandfather. He loved to travel, but was happiest when he was on his farm, it was stated. Mr. Griffeth was preceded in death by three brothers, Joe K. Griffeth, Charles S. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 28, at Moon’s Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Wayne Arnold and Edward Bolen officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. The staff of University Tire Company, Carlton Bradshaw, Richard Collins, Leonard Helton, Chad Sailors, Steve Tumlin and Carlton Williams served as pallbearers. Mr. Griffeth is survived by his wife, Harriette Hawkins Griffeth; children, Phillip Comer and April Suzanne Griffeth, Gina Elizabeth Griffeth and John Gavin and April McElreath Griffeth; grandchildren, Savannah Lauren Griffeth, Phillip Carson Griffeth and Mattison Helen Griffeth; brother, Kenneth Griffeth, Colbert; and sister, Sarah Griffeth Jordan, Covington. Mr. Mize was born in Hart County on April 15, 1917. He was a son of the late O.C. and Quillie Winn Mize. Mr. Mize was retired from Monroe Automotive Equipment and was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by three infant children, a sister, Dora Whitmire, and an infant brother. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 29, at Holly Springs Baptist Church with the Revs. Johnny Stowe and Bobby Jones officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mr. Mize’s nephews served as pallbearers. Bond, 86, of Toccoa, died Sunday, March 28, 2004, at Stephens County Hospital. A daughter of the late William E. and Leila Haggard Bond, she was born November 24, 1917, in Madison County. She lived most of her life in Stephens County. Miss Bond retired from Coats and Clark after 30 years of service and was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, in Hillcrest Chapel of Acree-Davis Funeral Home, Toccoa, with the Rev. Dr. Jim Nelson and the Rev. Tim Barrett officiating. Mrs. Isbell was born in Hart County on November 9, 1922, a daughter of the late Horace Linton and Georgia Elmyra Beggs Reed. She retired from Monroe Automotive Equipment and Cobb Health Care Systems and was a member of Providence United Methodist Church. Mrs. Isbell was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Victor Isbell, a son, Bobby Marshall Isbell, and a brother, John R. Reed. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, in the Providence United Methodist Church Cemetery, Lavonia, with the Rev. Mark Palmer officiating. Vickery Leonard Johnson Vickery, 76, of Hartwell, died Sunday, March 28, 2004, at Atria Health Care Center in Hartwell. Mr. Vickery was born in Franklin County on June 18, 1927, a son of the late Willie Francis and Carrie Norris Vickery. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Anita Carroll Vickery. A graduate of Royston High School, Mr. Vickery was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Philippines during World War II. He retired after working 43 years as a linesman for the Hart Electric Membership Corporation. He was a member of Sardis Baptist Church and a former deacon and chairman of the Board of Deacons at Flat Shoals Baptist Church. Mr. Vickery was preceded in death by two brothers, Doyle and Bobby J. Mr. Kenner was a decorated veteran, having served in the United States Navy during World War II in Pearl Harbor and at the Guadal Canal. He was a member of the Western Conference of Teamsters. Wilson, 79, of Athens, died at his home on Thursday, March 25, 2004. Born in Tignall on June 7, 1924, Mr. Wilson was the son of the late A.L. and Effie Haralson Wilson. He retired after 36 years of service from Winn Dixie Stores, having managed stores in Elberton and Athens. He was a member of Beech Haven Baptist Church and the Senior Coed Sunday School Class. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Wilson served in the 44th Infantry Division, 3rd Army in the European Theater, receiving three Bronze Stars in major battles. He was a member of the Athens Elks Lodge, the American Legion and the VFW. Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret W. Hyde. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27, in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. John Walker officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Gabriel Mrs. Doris Elizabeth Gabriel, 79, of Winterville, died Friday, March 26, 2004. A native of Oglethorpe County, Mrs. Gabriel was born June 16, 1924. She was a daughter of the late Joe and Julia Elizabeth McElhannon, Lexington. Mrs. Gabriel was a member of Northside Baptist Church and enjoyed attending when she was physically able, it was stated. Many who knew her know that she loved her family, home, cooking and her flowers. She was a beloved mother and grandmother. Mrs. Gabriel was preceded in death by a daughter, Doris Annette “Net” Wynn, Athens, and a grandson, David S. Arnold, Denver, Col. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, Athens, with Mrs. Gabriel’s sons, Ralph Arnold and Merle Arnold, and good friend, Nathan Palmer, officiating. Burial was in the Winterville Cemetery. Bobby Hubbard, Wesley Perry, Angelo Wheeler, Mark McCormack, Jeff Hale and Eddie Arnold served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Anthony Perry, Michael Mech and Brison Harbin. Mrs. Gabriel is survived by her husband of 29 years, Thomas E. Gabriel, Winterville; her children, Julia “Liz” Duncan, Athens, Ralph “Yankee” Arnold and Merle “Little Man” Arnold, both of Winterville, Kay F. Hale, Colbert, and Sybil Chandler, Hull; step- daughter, Debra Smith, Virginia; 16 grandchildren, two of which she raised, Elizabeth “Sissy” Perry, Comer, and Bobby Hubbard, Bogart; and 23 great-grandchildren.
