She was born October 8, 1925 in St. Petersburg, Fla. Charles Venable Charles Lewis Venable, 66 of Crawford, died Saturday, July 31, 2004. Lucy Hall Lucy Evelyn Hall, 88, of Athens, died Sunday, August 1, 2004. She was a native of Madison County and was a daughter of the late James Pendleton and Letitia Herring Hall. She was retired after 40 years with the University of Georgia Agriculture Extension Service and was a supporter of UGA Volleyball. In addition to supporting UGA athletics, she was an avid Atlanta Braves fan, according to relatives. Ms. Hall was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Athens. Survivors include several cousins. Graveside services were to be Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Oconee Hill Cemetery. (Mac) McDonald, 78, Statham, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004. Mr. McDonald was the son of the late Asbury Luther and Bonnie Bell Frady McDonald. He was an employee of Garrett Paving and was a Baptist. Survivors include his wife Lois White McDonald, Statham; four sons, Anthony McDonald and David Blackman, both of Statham, Jeff McDonald, Florida, and Victor Blackman, Comer; two daughters, Sue McDonald Miller, Morganton, N.C., and Clair Thurmond, Bogart; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four sisters, Frances Cooper of Mulberry, Fla., Rachel Oswalt, Betty McDonald and Laurie McDonald, all of Gainesville; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Martha Graham Miss Martha Jeanie Graham, 50, Comer, died Saturday, July 31, 2004 at the Athens Regional Medical Center, Athens. She was born in Franklin County, August 6, 1953, daughter of Willie T. Graham, Comer, and the late Helen Coile Graham. She was a seamstress and member of the Faith Baptist Church. Other survivors include brothers and sisters-in-law, Ned and Linda Graham, Larry and Gwen Graham, Comer; sisters and brothers-in-law, Patsy and Don Crowe, Carolyn Beilew, Comer; three nephews; three nieces; four great-nieces. Funeral services were held August 3, 2004 at the Pruitt Funeral Home Chapel, Royston, with the Rev. James Creason and Otis Graham officiating. Burial was in the Hill Crest Cemetery in Bowman. Butler, 76, of Athens, died Thursday, July 29, 2004 at Athens Regional Hospital. He was born August 19, 1928, in Greenville, S.C. and was preceded in death by a daughter, Shelby Jean Butler. Mr. Butler was retired, but was the past owner and operator of Davis House Cafeteria and Kentucky Fried Chicken in Athens, Elberton, Milledgeville, and Covington. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. Mr. Butler served on the Board of Directors of Athens Regional Hospital, National Restaurant Association, and was an Honorary Kentucky Colonel. Survivors include his wife, Sandra Butler; two daughters, Tommie Axelberd, Salem, S.C,. and Terri Butler Chandler, Danielsville; three granddaughters, Lori Crowley, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Jennifer Schuch, Flowery Branch, Stephanie Crowley, Easley, S.C.; two grandsons, Thomas Kummero of the home, and Grant Butler, Danielsville; one great- granddaughter, Haley Schuch, Flowery Branch; four brothers, William Butler, Badin, N.C., James (Pat) Butler, Colorado Springs, Colo., Joseph (Joe Butler, Hull, and Harold Butler, Houston, Tex.; three sisters, Polly Jenkins, Greer, S.C., Rachel Jones, Mauldin, S.C., and Jan McClain, Ila; 11 nephews; and 9 nieces. Ida Vaughn Mrs. Ida Rea Long Vaughn, 89, died Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at the New Horizon West Care Center, Gainesville. Mrs. Vaughn was born in Madison County, April 29, 1916, the daughter of the late John H. and Lenora H. Long. She was a homemaker and member of the Shiloh Baptist Church, Madison County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eldridge Vaughn and a daughter, Mary Knapp. Survivors include two brothers; six sisters; three grandchildren; and one niece, Linda Hollifield, Gainesville. Graveside services were held Monday, August 2, 2004 at Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Glenn Guest officiating. Payne, 72, Commerce, died Friday, July 30, 2004 at Athens Regional Medical Center. He was the son of the late D.K. and Eva Luthi Payne. He was a native of Jackson County born April 18, 1931, and was the retired owner of Paynes’ Auto Parts. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Commerce and a United States Air Force Veteran. Survivors include his wife, Juanita Griffin Payne, Commerce; daughter Debra Cochran, Maysville, daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and David Hawks, Commerce, Beth and Tommy Haggard, Athens; brother George K. Payne, Hull; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held August 1, 2004 from the Chapel of little- Ward Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald Wilson officiating. Melvin Atkinson Melvin Steve Atkinson, 68, of 191 Teresa Atkinson Road, Royston, died Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at the Cobb Memorial Hospital, Royston. Mr. Atkinson was born in Franklin County, October 27, 1935, and was the son of the late Martin J. and Bertha Roach Atkinson. He had been a truck driver for over 50 years and was employed with Adams Motor Express. Mr. Atkinson was a United States Army veteran and a member of the Riverside Baptist Church. His wife was the late JoAnn Fortson Atkinson Also, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Teresa Atkinson. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Nelson and Sherry Atkinson, Royston; two grandchildren, Mason and Nikki Atkinson, Royston; one sister Phyllis Atkinson, Royston; and a special friend, Beth Dickson. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 31, 2004, at the Riverside Baptist Church with the Revs. Leon Carson, Harold LeCroy and Roger Elrod officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Carl Seagraves Carl Vernon Seagraves, 71, Athens, died July 28, 2004. He was a native and lifelong resident of this area. Mr. Seagraves was the son of the late William Carlton and Annie Lee Rice Seagraves and was preceded in death by a brother. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in the Korean War and was retired from Champion-Dairy Pak. He was a member of Joy Baptist Church. Survivors include one son, Doug Seagraves, Danielsville; one daughter, Lynn Thompson, Loganville; six brothers; eight sisters; and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday, July 30, 2004, at the chapel of Lord and Stephens, Danielsville, with the Rev. Barry Black officiating. Burial was in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Grace Threlkeld Mrs. Grace Compton Threlkeld, 85, Comer, died Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at the Athens Regional Medical Center, Athens. She was born in Madison County September 29, 1918, and was the daughter of the late Webster G. (Boss) and Mazelle Lord Compton. She was a member of Vineyard’s Creek Baptist Church. Mrs. Threlkeld was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer C. Threlkeld, an infant daughter, two brothers and one sister. Survivors include two sons, James A. Threlkeld, Comer, and E. Grady Threlkeld, McDonough; two daughters, Sarah C. Mitchell, Lawrenceville, and Norma J. Toth, Comer; one brother, Fred W. Compton, Comer; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Friday, July 30, 2004, at the Vineyard’s Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Calvin Coile, Dr. Larry Green and Mrs. Threlkeld’s grandson, Matthew Mitchell, officiating. Holman Brown John Holman Brown, 74, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004. Mr. Brown was born in Clarke County on December 1, 1929. He was the son of the late J.H. Brown and Lee Anna Tolbert Brown. He was preceded in death by his son, Byron Holman Brown, a brother, Howard Brown, and a nephew, Tommy Brown. He was a graduate of Athens High School, a member of Athens Historical Society, and a member of Athens Antique Car Club for 36 years. He retired from Trussell Ford-Mazda after 32 years and was employed by T.H. Evans Enterprises for 19 years until his death. He was a member of the Athens First Christian Church. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Betty Sanders Brown; daughter and son-in-law, Meliss and Randy Power; two grandchildren, Morgan and Josh Power; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Arnold and Lizzie Sanders, Hull; sister-in-law, Maggie Brown, Athens; nephew, Lauren Brown, Atlanta; and a niece, Shelly Thomas, Blairsville. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 22, 2004 at Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ray Jenkins officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers were Thomas Evans, Darrell Sheats, C.A. Lowry, Edwin Oldham, Thomas Cothran, Gerald Maddox, Johnny Simmons and Tommy Patterson. Honorary pallbearers were the employees of T.H.
