L. Hodges to be presented at the memorial of Brother John E. Gordon, to be held at the March Term, 1924; at the Madison Superior Court. Your committee beg leave to submit the following: Brother John E. Gordon was born in the 6th day of November, 1854, in Franklin County where he spent his young life. His father was killed in the Civil War, at the Battle of Vicksburg, while defending the rights of his loved Southland. It thus devolved early in life on him to look after, provide for and support his widowed mother, two sisters, and a small brother. These duties he performed ably and well. At the age of twenty-five he moved to Madison County and engaged in mercantile business; he married Miss Georgia A. Porterfield, a daughter of Richard Porterfield, a properous farmer of Madison County, soon after his coming here. Ten children were the issue of this marriage, eight of whom survive him together with his wife. He joied the Methodist church some thirty-eight years ago. Was a good and consistent member, and for some years prior to his death, he was a Steward and Trustee of the Danielsville Methodist Church. For some years he was Treasurer of the County of Madison and he also hold the office of councilman and later Mayor of Danielsville for a number of terms. Brother Gordon was admitted to the Bar on the 5th day of March, 1896, by Judge Samuel Lumpkin then presiding; he was examined by Hon. Howard then Solicitor, now leading lawyer of Augusta, the late Judge David W. Meadow, under whom he read Law and others. He devoted his time to the practice of his profession, from that time to the day of his death. Being connected with almost all of the important cases in the courts of that county. He had considerable farming interest in the County, from which he derived until recently a good income, being a successful farmer as well as lawyer. At the time of his death, Oct. 7th, 1923, he was the oldest member of the Bar at Danielsville; He was within one month of seventy years of age at the time of his death. He formed a partnership with his son, R. Howard Gordon, in 1914, of which he was Senior member. The partenership continued until the time of his death. He left surviving him Mrs. Georgia A. Gordon, his wife, and eight children: Mrs. Clyde W. Stewart of Orlando, Florida; Mrs. Effie L. Smith of Atlanta; Mrs. Bethel R. Rogers of Danielsville; Mrs. Gertie Graham of Athens; Mr. E. C. Gordon of Athens; Mr. R. H. Gordon of Danielsvile; Mr. J. T. Gordon of Elberton; and Mr. J. E. Gordon, Jr. of the United States Navy. Resolved , that in the death of Brother John E. Gordon, the Methodist Church lost a good and consistent member, the town of Danielsville and Madison County a prominent citizen, and one who was always ready to extend a helping hand to others; the Bar a promoinent and loved member; and the family a devoted, kind and indulgent husband and father. We all not only miss him now but will continue to do so as the years roll on. Resolved, further, That the Judge of the Superior court of Madiosn County be, and is requested to have these resolutions spread upon the Minutes of the Suerior court of said County, as a Memorial of our departed brother John E.
