D.W. Meadow, a prominent and very popular citizen of Elberton but who was born and reared in this county, where he was well known and universally loved and esteemed by our people, died at the Georgian Hotel, in Athens, after a brief illness, of pneumonia. He had gone to Athens on legal business and was so suddenly and violently attacked with pneumonia that it was deemed not prudent to remove him to his home, and after about three weeks of suffering his spirit was released and the weary body was at rest. Judge Meadow was in the 65th year of his age when death came. He was one of the most prominent men Madison county ever produced, having held many positions of trust and honor. He had represented his county in the loser house of the State legislature, had held the position of solicitor of the Northern circuit for two terms and was judge of the Northern circuit for two terms. All these positions he filed with distinguished honor and to the entire satisfaction of the people. At the time of his death he was the only surviving executor of the estate of James M. Smith. Judge Meadow was a model husband and father, and his death has brought a deep and lasting grief to his faithful wife and four surviving children who, in this terrible ordeal have the active and sincere condolence and sympathy of all the people of Madison county and an numerable host of true friends thruout this section. By his genial, generous hearted and companionable disposition Judge Meadow made fast friends of almost every one he met and consequently was known and highly esteemed by a large number of people thruout the State, who learned of his death with deep and true regret. He was a true, firm generous hearted, self sacrificing friend, a prominent public spirited valuable citizen , an affectionate and indulgent husband and father a highly intelligent, warm-hearted gentleman and always contributed liberally of his means for the support of the church and all public benefactions and to the relief of the distresses of those who were less fortunate than himself. He will be greatly missed, not only in his immediate community, but thruout this entire section, for his liberal contributions to all worthy causes. To sum up his character in two words, he was a manly man, and his memory all the enshrined in the hearts of a very large number of friends thruout the State. The funeral was held at the First Methodist Church in Athens, Saturday, Dec 30th, and although the weather was severely inclement was attended by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends and his body was committed to beautiful Oconee cemetery in that city with Masonic honors.
