J. H. MATHEWS PASSES FUNERAL SERVICES HELD SUNDAY AFTERNOON Mr. J. H. Mathews, one of the oldest and most prominent citizens of Comer, died at his residence last Saturday morning at 7:35 o'clock following a long illness. He was 89 years of age. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from Comer Baptist Church, Rev. Joe V. Cook, Pastor and Rev. Henry Walker, Methodist Pastor, officiating. Burial was in Comer cemetery, with McDorman Bridges in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Messers. C. B. Ayers, _. L. McMurray, W. F. Carithers, _. M. Wilkins, J. A. Sims and W. S. _owe. Surviving Mr. Mathews are two daughters, Mrs. Delia Anthony, Comer, and Mrs. Florence Alexander, Winston-Salem, N. C.; three sons: _. C. Mathews, Greensboro, N.C.; _. K. Mathews, Atlanta, and Harold _. Mathews, Winston- Salem, N. C.; eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Mathews was one of the founders of the town of Comer, and was one of the first persons to build a home there more than forty-eight years ago. He assisted in organizing the Baptist Church in Comer and helped to build the first church being a charter member. He had been a deacon in ___ church since its organization, recently he retired as an active Deacon and was elected Deacon Emeritus for life. He was the oldest living member of the church and was one of the outstanding citizens of this community and section. Over a long period of years he had been in the forefront of any government looking to the up building of his community country and state and was ever ready to give generously of his time, labor and resources for any worthwhile cause. In his passing Comer loses a most ___ citizen and his death removes a friend from a devoted circles.
