L. Mercier age 74, prominent and well known citizen of this County and resident of Paoli, died early last Saturday morning following a brief illness. Mr. Mercier suffered a stoke about two o'clock in the morning and died a few hours later. A native of Madison County, Mr. Mercier had extensive farming and mercantile interests and had helped many people who came under his interest and attention. He was depply interested in County affairs having served four years in the Legislature. However, he gave his first interest to home and home comunity and was instrumental in maintaining the school at Paoli through a long period of years. A member of long standing of New Hope Presbyterian Church and an Elder in the Church. He gave ______ of his time and efforts to all its interests. Mr. Mercier was married to the former Miss Susie David and he was her devoted husband throughout the years. Dr. E. L. Hill, who conducted his Funeral, paid high tribute to Mr. Mercier. He recalled his integration of the Twenty-third Psalm and this scripture was again used Sunday afternoon at the Funeral Services held at the church. Interment was in the Paoli cemetery. Pallbearers were Messers. Hiram Whitehead, Knox Gholston, Gerald Birchmore, Roper David, J. L. McMurray and Coke Davis. Surviving Mr. Mercier is his wife, Mrs. Susie David Mercier; a sister, Mrs. J. L. Freeman, Ila; one brother Mr. Allen Mercier, Fitzgerald and the following nieces and nephews: Mrs. Beatrice M. Thomas, J. L. Martin; O. F. Martin; R. G. Martin; Tom Martin; T. D. Hawkes; H. C. Hawkes; Mrs. R. G. Hawkes; J. L. Hawkes; O. N. Hawkes; Mrs Omiah Chandler, all of Athens; Mrs. Callie Martin Thornton, Emporia, Va., Mrs. Alice M. Williams, Augusta; Willie R. Mercier, Ila; mrs. Cornelia Hart, Colbert; Mrs. Lois Mercier Burroughs, Mrs. Bessie Mercier O'Kelley, Danielsville; Mrtimer Mercier David, Little Rock, Ark.; Grady Mercier, Thomasville; J. L. Mercier, Hugh Mercier; Miss Susie Mercier Buford; Roy Mercier, M. J. Martin, Atlanta; James Mercier, Miamii, Fla.; Robert Mercier, Rebecca, Ga.; Ernest Mercier, Obadiah Mercier of Commerce.
