J. O'Kelley caused a pall of sorrow to rest heavily over the County last Thursday for in his death the County loses a valuable and peaceble citizen. He was a tender and thoughtful husband, a devoted father, an upright citizen doing unto others as he would they should do unto him, being at all times carefule to meet his obligations to his fellow man, making at all times his word his bond, proving faithful in all things. His life was long and useful. He was born Oct. 26, 1861, being married to Miss Alice Lenora Fortson March 23, 1883, to which happy union was born thirteen children, four of whom preceded him to the grave, leaving Wilburn R., William J., Frank G., Grady, J. Isiah, Gordon G. and Miss Viola Y. O'Kelley; Mesdames Burgess G. Hunt, and G. Wamie Sanders. To the different marriages of the children are eleven grandchildren. He has one sister, Mrs. L. E. Bennett, now of Oklahoma, one brother, James O'Kelley and three half-brothers, Jetie, Willis and John O'Kelley, of Alabama, and only one uncle survives him, William G. David of this city. He was true to his friends and uncompromising with wrong, believing and living that which he thought to be right. His life was practically devoted to farming in which he was quite successful, having accumulated a good sized farm which is in a magnificent state of cultivation. He connected himself with the Primitive Baptist church at Union in 1877 and was ordained by that church on May 15, 1896, in which church he labored for a goodly period after which he was ordained by the Union Missionary Baptist church on Sept. 30, 1906. "Uncle Joe" as everybody knew him had been suffering from dropsy for several months and was attended with deep care and interest by his family and friends. He died on Nov. 9, 1921 and was laid to rest in Unioin cemetery on Nov. 10 among a large concourse of friends and relatives after a beautiful sermon by Rev. W. M. Coile of Winterville, Ga.
