DR. A. L. PAYNE, prominent Madison County physician, died at a local hospital at 10 o’clock Saturday night. He had been ill only three days. He was 65 years of age. Dr. Payne was born in Carnesville, GA, Franklin County, but resided at Fort Lamar in Madison County for over 30 years. He was widely known as one of the most prominent physician in North East Georgia, and numbered his friends in this section by the thousands. One son, Prof. W/ O. Payne of Athens, holds a chair of history at the University and another, Dr. DeWitt Payne, resides at Fort Lamar where he is in the active practice of medicine. Both are well known locally and throughout the State. Funeral services and interment will be announced later, it was stated Saturday night. Dr. Payne was a member of the Methodist Church. The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lucy Trella Payne; 2 sons, Prof. W. O. Payne of Athens and Dr. Dewitt Payne of Fort Lamar, and 1 daughter, Mrs. C. N. McWhirter of Athens.
