Athens Banner-Herald, March 2, 1942
MRS. LUCY TERELLA MILLICAN PAYNE, mother of Dr. W. O. Payne of the University of 
Georgia faculty, died at her home in Fort Lamar Monday morning at 5:45 o’clock.  
Mrs. Payne was 84 years old and had been ill for several days.
	Services are to be held Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock from Bernstein 
Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. T. H. Wheelis, pastor of Danielsville Methodist 
church, and Rev. David Cady Wright, rector of Emmanuel Episcopal church, 
officiating.  Interment will follow in Oconee Hill cemetery.
	Surviving Mrs. Payne is a daughter, Mrs. P. M. McWhirter of 
Danielsville; 2 sons, Dr. Dewitt Payne of Washington, DC and W. O. Payne of 
Athens; 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
	A native of Franklin County, Mrs. Payne lived at Fort Lamar for 50 
years.  She was a member of Liberty Methodist Church and always took an active 
interest in church work.
	Possessed of a cheerful disposition and radiant personality, Mrs. Payne 
held the esteem and affection of all with whom she came in contact.  Though her 
years were many, she managed to keep youthful in spirit and mind.
	Through many visits made here with her son, Mrs. Payne made many friends 
in Athens who will be deeply saddened by her passing.  She was the widow of Dr. 
A. L. Payne, one of the outstanding citizens of this section.
