Professor Payne’s pastor, Rev. David Cady Wright, rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, will conduct services at 4 p.m. at the church. At 9 a.m. Sunday morning the body will be carried to the Chapel of the University and will remain there within the historic walls of the old building and the environs of the college community wherein Mr. Payne labored so long and so acceptably. An hour before the services, the body will be transported to the church. Professor Payne was a favorite in the social life of Athens. He was an entertaining conversationalist and his many interests in life enabled him to be at home in almost any group. Outside of the profession he served so long and so conspicuously well, athletics was his chief interest. He was a great University sports fan and contributed immeasurably to the progress of the University in athletics, a service which was formally recognized when Dr. S. V. Sanford resigned the faculty chairmanship of athletics and was succeeded by Mr. Payne. Later on, Mr. Payne was also made Athletics Director, but resigned this position when his health became impaired. Professor Payne was one of the most thoroughly liked and popular men on the faculty not only among his colleagues and the students, but among the citizens of Athens as well. There was in his character an impression of strength, of integrity, of strong common sense, of straight thinking and of friendly kindliness and understanding. In his private, social and religious life and associations, Mr. Payne always took a prominent and exemplary part. He long served as secretary of the Alpha of Georgia Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa Society. He was a member and faculty advisor of Sigma Chi Fraternity, and an active member of Sphinx, Blue Key Society, Gridiron Club, and other college organizations. Beyond the campus he was an influential member of the Kiwanis Club, and took his part in various municipal and civic organizations and movements. He was prominent in the congregation of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and was a valued member of the Vestry. He was regarded as a thoroughly reliable, trustworthy, responsible man who could always be counted upon to bear his full share of the load. ----------------- Same paper; same date Funeral notice PAYNE – THE FRIENDS AND RELATIVES OF Dr. and Mrs. William Oscar Payne of Athens; Ensign & Mrs. George D.
