He was born in Dodge County June 13, 1926, the son of Alexander Edward Pruett and Alice Dora Giddens. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, and especially Pa as he was known to his family, according to loved ones. He was a veteran having served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He graduated from Denver College with a degree in Food Science. Mr. Pruett retired from Westclox after 38 years of loyal service, then attended the University of Georgia for three years to work towards his degree in Journalism. He has written many songs, one nationally recorded “The Rose in the Bible”. He and his sister, Peggy, in May 1948 began a country music singing career on WAGA as pioneers before moving to WRFC to host the live show “Pee Wee and Peggy and the Oconee River Boys”. They topped the Hillbilly Hit Parade in the early 50’s with the song Paper of Pins, and are also in the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. While listening to Rev. Virgil Edwards on WRFC, he dedicated his heart and life to Christ, and then used his smooth and musical talents to direct church choirs for 51 years. Also, he, his wife, Janette, and the late Jim Murray formed the recording group the Blessed Hope Trio. They traveled all over the south to share the message of Christ in song. Mr. Pruett helped Rev. Edwards organize Northside Baptist Church of Athens, helped to organize Grace Baptist Church in Iva, S.C., and Brockton Road Baptist Church in Jefferson. He assisted Rev. James Brock in organizing a Christian camp for kids, Camp Maranatha of Ila. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Janette Self Pruett; sons and daughters-in-law, Stanley and Kathy Pruett, Danielsville, Daniel and Keribeth Pruett, Colbert; daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy Pruett McCoy and Steve, Hollywood, and Vonda Pruett Peyton and Wes, Watkinsville; seven grandchildren, Thad Pruett, Priscilla Pruett, Andrew Pruett, Annabeth Pruett, Eddie Peyton, Eric Peyton, and Alec Peyton; sister, Peggy Pritchett, Nashville, Tenn.; brother, Walter Pruett, Cayce, S.C.; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday, December 27, at Joy Baptist Church in Hull where he attended church with the Revs. Barry Black, Buford Lockman and Jamie Doster officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Athens. Pallbearers were Leland Morgan, Thad Pruett, Jerry Self, Donnie Self, Lewis Self and William Chandler.
