Smith died at his home in Comer, Ga., Thursday night, December 26, 1940, at 9:30 o'clock, following an illness of four months. He was 71 years of age. He was a native of Madison County and a former resident of Athens for 20 years. He had resided in Comer, Ga., for the past two years He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Emma Dye Smith; a daughter, Mrs. C. J. Dye, of Athens; three sons, Mr. W. E. Smith, Decatur, Ga., ; Mr. W. L. Smith, Atlanta, Ga.; and Mr. J. C. Smith, Macon, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. Turner Bradberry, Mrs. Henry Thompson, both of Greenwood, S. C.; two brothers, Mr. Ben Smith, Comer, Ga. and Mr. George Smith, Greenwood, S. C. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The funeral was this, Friday afternoon, December 27, 1940, at four o'clock from the Meadow Baptist church. Rev. Callaway, pastor of the Meadow Baptist church, officiated. Members of the Mt. Vernon Lodge 22 of Masons served as pallbearers and Masons had charge of the services at the grave. Interment was in Meadow cemetery. McDorman-Bridges.
