P. Smith Held; Died Thursday Funeral services were held this afternoon at 4 o'clock from the Meadow Baptist church for J. P. Smith, 72, former prominent Athens man who had lived in Comer for the past two years. He died at his home Thursday after an illness of four months. Services were conducted by the Rev. Callaway, and burial was in Meadow cemetery. McDorman-Bridges Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A native of Madison county, Mr. Smith lived in Athens for 20 years before moving to Comer two years ago. He was connected with the Climax Hosiery Mills while in Athens. He was a member of the Mount Vernon Lodge of Masons, and that organization had charge of graveside services. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Emma Dye Smith; daughter, Mrs. C. J. Dye, Athens; three sons, W. E. Smith, Decatur; W. L. Smith, Atlanta; and J. C. Smith, Macon; two sisters, Mrs. Turner Bradberry and Mrs. Henry Thompson, both of Greenwood, S. C.; two brothers, Ben Smith, Comer; and George Smith, Greenwood, S. C.; 13 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Additional Comments: James P. Smith obit 1 on page 7.
