So it was with our friend, Mrs. Stephens--who quietly fell asleep on Monday, October __th, after a long life of more that eight four years. She was a strong Christian daughter---unusual in many ____--- ___ spoken when ____, a sympathetic understanding of others difficulties---an interest in public affairs, especially of the church and schools; which interest continued thru her long life. Mrs. Stephens was a friend of my mother and grandmother. She was also my friend, and I have known her for many years. My memory goes back eighteen years, to a day in Novermber, when word came that the Armistice was signed and the dreadful war was over. I had already heard the news, but my friend did not know that I had, so she hurried to my home to bring the glad tidings and rejoice with me. She knew how anxious I had been for my two dear sons, who were in the Service. Her life was optimistic to a marked degree. We have known her when clouds hung low--when sickness was in the home for long periods--even when Death entered and claimed her loved ones she was able to rise above it all and still carry on with a cheerful face to the future. Her life was a lfe of industry--whatsoever her hands found to do, that she did. She looked on work as a road leading to contentment and happiness, and a necessity to our well being. Her friends will reacll that her hands were seldom idle--how much beautiful work she did in embroidery, crocheting and knitted articles--much of this done in the last few years. She was among thousands of good mothers who seldom see their names in print- -who crave no publicity--whose sole ambition is to fill acceptably the place in which God placed them--who go about doing good--who rejoice when their sons and daughters fill acceptably the places in the world which they can serve best. And her children rise up and call her blessed. "To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die." -- Mrs. J. C.
